A POSTMAN who dumped 700 letters in a river and hoarded more than 3,500 at his home is facing jail.
David Millar, 31, was warned by a judge at Manchester magistrates' court that he was facing custody after hearing that the postman threw letters into the River Mersey over a five-month period.
Once it was spotted that Millar, of Bucklow Drive, Northenden, had been dumping letters, a team of investigators called at his home.
They found 3,278 packages hidden in a shed and 300 more opened inside the house, Post Office prosecutor David Pojer told the court. He said the offences were committed between November 2004 and April 2005.
An investigation was launched and Millar resigned in April 2005 after three years in the job.
Deputy district judge Richard Clewes said he was `troubled' that a previous bench had ruled out Millar being sent for sentence to the crown court.
He said: "This case sails past the custody threshold. This was a public servant and the population need to have complete confidence in him.
"It's the potential for emotional harm caused by this kind of conduct that has to be acknowledged."
Millar admitted five counts of delaying the post and theft and was bailed until next month for sentence.
Ruth Gill, defending, said that at the time of the offences Millar had been having problems with his employment and his partner.
A spokesman for the Royal Mail said: "We have a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty.
"And the Royal Mail stance is shared by the huge majority of our postmen and women.
"They are honest and hard-working and will do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely."

Not the brightest lad going. The Mersey must be about three feet deep in that part of Manchester. You could probably walk across by the time he had finished dumping his mail. What the bloody hell are these people on?
