Royal Mail launches investigation after mail for delivery goes missing

AN investigation is under way by Royal Mail after post which was due for delivery in a Scots town went missing.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman confirmed an investigations team is looking into the disappearance of mail which was sent to Lochgilphead, Argyll.

She added that an individual who is allegedly involved in the incident, no longer works for Royal Mail.

The spokeswoman added: “We take a zerotolerance approach to any dishonesty by our staff.

“This stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women who work hard to provide a first-class service for our customers six days a week. We are currently investigating this matter.”

Sergeant Iain MacNicol, of Lochgilphead Police, said: “We are aware of it, it’s the Royal Mail investigations team who are dealing with it, the Glasgow office is the lead agency and they can put a report in to the procurator fiscal.

“We did briefly assist, when we were made aware of it , we just stood by some mail for a while and they collected it.”

A letter of apology from Royal Mail has been sent to affected customers, stating that they believe the cause of the problem has been identified and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.
