A MEMBER of the Territorial Army has been told he cannot serve his country and keep his day job under new European working regulations.
The postal worker, who we have agreed not to name, faces having to give up his paid post with the Territorial Army by April when new laws limiting working hours for lorry drivers are put into place.
He must now either quit the TA or the Royal Mail or find another job within the company by April.
I am an ex-serviceman and your right, even though we called them "Weekend Warriors" we had a lot of mutual respect for and from them, expecially now with Iraq and Afghanistan giong on.

I have just this morning got back from my first fortnight training as a Recky Mec for the R.E.M.E. TA,and have another fortnight in three weeks time.
Must admit that Royal Mail are good about it, giving me a fortnights extra paid holiday to train.
An interesting thing was how fit i am, i am 41 (the maximum joining age is now 43) and i am a lot fitter than the 20 and 30 year olds, must be down to the job.

Well done "Reck Em Mend Ems" always did top notch jobs when I was in on active service. If they fixed it, it was one thing I never had to worry about

I too was for a short time in the TA, or rather the red caps -- Military Police. Failed my medical for both the army and the TA, but find that I'm still fit enough to work almost non-stop for God knows how many hours working RM. Funny that?
I wonder how many people who readily slag off us posties would feel if they had to endure something less than fitness if they had not their bums to just sit on all day?
We posties do things differently, but we still get shot at!
Earning extra money in the TA has often meant that employers realise they can pay less than otherwise be the case. If this ruling means TA numbers drop, then so be it - it was just a way of the government getting more working class lads to fight their illegal wars on the cheap.
Name him and give him a 'chuffin' medal. This guys a hero twice over, working for RM deserves a medal. Serving in the TA deserves a medal
