Fudge, Fudge, Fudge.
This was more than a pay dispute, it was about smashing the union.
It seems to me in many ways they have succeded. Its all down to local
agreements and if you don't get an agreement, changes will be implemented
anyway.Without national agreements your shafted.
Bonus schemes - A joke!
D2D - left out!
Pensions - left out!
1.5% next year dependant on introduction of change - laughable!
Sorry but despite all the spin, I'll be voting NO.
We had them on the ropes and we let them off.
The way forward - I've no fcuking idea, but if this gets accepted there is no way back.
VOTE NO

As we sat and watched the debate unfold the key point that MUST be asked by members and representatives is if we reject this document what is next?
• Are members prepared for more action
• Can we move Royal Mail further with more action
• If this deal is unacceptable what is palatable?

It is easy to say no. it is easy to just sit back and refuse change. It is far harder to grab it by the scruff or the neck and start leading members.

I don’t think your questions are necessarily the right ones but let me try to answer them.

My previous post didn't make clear what bits were new so I have cut and pasted the bits where I reply to Lovejoy's post:

"I thought you were going to answer the questions. Are you a politician?"

No - and I have no position in the union - whereas you are clearly very involved in CWU politics and the questions you ask avoid other questions like why did Ward lead the strike so badly? You have a lot of respect on this site for being a source of reliable information - but why did we have to rely on the drips you were willing to feed us, why didn't Ward tell us what was going on. Why were we kept in the dark about the deal when the PEC
knew about it? The ordinary menbers were treated with contempt by the union!

"Are members prepared for more action? - You don't say yes but you tell us the unofficial action would have spreasd. I don't think so. Even amongst the most millitant reps there is a reluctance to enter into unofficial IA and members across the Country are weary. Remember of 8th Oct only parts of London and Liverpool went over later starts. THIS ISSUE AFFFECTED ALL DELIVERY STAFF IN A MAJOR WAY so if there was to be a mass unofficial walkout it would have happen then!"

What I pointed towas that the unofficial was spreading - large parts of Londion came out on the Friday and more importantly once the official action had just been declared unlawful it seemed likely that there would be unofficial walk outs in reponse. Of course speculation has it that the whole point of the injunction hours before the deal was to help Ward to get us back to work!

Of course we are no longer where we were. The situation has changed and it is the union that has done its best to turn off the anger and fighting mood. So now we have to prepare for new battles for example over pensions and against the implementation of this deal.

"Could we have moved Royal Mail - Yes you say Liverpool showed us the way - The way to what, going out on your own and your colleagues standing and watching from the rest of the Country. I 100% respect the way Liverpool acted but the rest of the UK and majority of members aren't interested in unofficial action"

We saw in the 2003 strike that unofficial action works when reps have thje balls to spread it.

"I do 100% agree with you that the Labour Gov is a joke and must be thrown out. "

Thrown out - how? The way I'd want this government defeated is by mass action. When we were on strike we were in a conflict with this government but our leaders would not carry that fight through. Why because they are supporters of that government!

"What is palatable... er, urm, er ....come on cut to the chase what do you want in the agreement that is different. "

No strings! No roll over on pensions. (I know the pensions bit has been decoupled for the moment, but we know from the PEC documents that hayes and ward are ready to do a dirty deal)

"You deny change is coming and attack anyone who dares to step forward and embrace it! - "

You sound like Tony Blair.

Yes you who I Ipresume are a full time union official dare embrace the worsening of my working conditions - what a brave fellow you are!

"This is the sadest point of all. through no fault of our own "

But through the labour party's efforts a party which Ward and hayes support.

"the market has been liberilised and competition is here. I personally think we will beat off competition "

the whole point about the postcomm regulator like previous regulators bringing in competition, is to break the monopoly. Also when you say 'we' that shows you identify with the business - with RM. Well I am not in a 'we' with RM management - RM management are my exploiters - I am in a 'we' with other workers against their bosses.

"but one thing their presence means is that the postal market is changing - FACT"

this 'FACT' has been politically created and could be changed if we fought hard enough but people like Hayes with a bad case of borowntongue will never fight hard except for their careers.

"To deny and hide from change is cowardly."

To accept the logic of the market as you do, is to accept that all we as workers can be is an exploitable resource to be used to make a profit.

"This is our only chance to shape it - If we dont Royal Mail will!"

You are arguing for the union working together with RM to respond to the competition - this boils down to one thing - ordinary posties will be required to work more for less.
Of course what matters is not what way we vote but what we are ready to do. You may be right that not enough posites were up for the kind of fight that could really have pushed RM and the government back. But the union by its demoralising way of conducting the strike and doing the deal has hampered such a fight. Voting no is a way of letting ward and hayes know we are pissed off and will maybe make them think twice before agreeing the trashing of our pensions.
i won't copy your post Left739 because i'll try to keep the thread from getting any bigger

To answer a couple of your points

1. I am not a full-time union official
2. I agree at times the information (or lack of it) was shocking and my branch have actually written to HQ to express this point very strongly!
3. The specualtion was that court injunction suited the union - I tell you what mate why don't you write to HQ and ask Dave word for the documentation that tripped up the union in court. The call off was the last thing the union wanted. I actually (in a funny way) think it helped secure a deal because Crozier realised that whilst he had stopped the official action then things could go off bug time unofficially on the Monday
4. So you see no strings as palatable? I agree with that too but theres only one way we could get a total victory and thats to go out and stay out!! - How many people do you think would sustain that action??
5. I don't accept anything - I just know that the world and not just Royal Mail is changing and while 'heroes' like you may wish to stand up on your soap box crying out for a return to the good old days i'd rather make sure we are looked after here and now!
6. If you ever want a real debate then PM me anytime.

We must remember that this is RM's agenda not ours. We are merely defending our position from a vicious onslaught by our employer. All we want is what we already have. This so called agreement is nothing less than total capitulation by our leadership.
This years pay deal is over 6 months instead of 12. Next years is a derisory 1.5% conditional on accepting strings again! So some offices might get it and some(read most) won't. Whatever happened to national pay bargaining?
Later starts are in, like it or not,but saturdays can revert to their previous times. How does that work? On a saturday the vans come up an hour earlier than the rest of the week? Can't see that happening somehow. The early shift allowance is gone but grandfather rights will exist for those already in receipt of it. So new starters working alongside us will be on less money creating a 2 tier workforce. It may be being discussed in a working group, but let's face it , how long do our leadership have to discuss things for, they've been going at it for months already. We must say no to working parties. Sort this out now not later.
Nearly everything that is in the original offer is in this agreement albeit in slightly different wording. Summer staffing is still there of course. Re-arranging responsibilities, 6 into 5 etc.. I do the job properly and work to my time. I've never tried to justify finishing early. The boss can give me as many walks as he wants to but I still start on time, take my break, weigh my bags, cycle out to my delivery and come back on time. There are postmen/women who will have undue pressure put on them to do more work and feel the need to do it. If it is only one it is one too many.
As for absorbing absences the same applies.
So RM manager speak is now entering into written agreements:- "give and take" - "swings and roundabouts". We've had all this from management for years when trying unsuccessfully to get us to work for nothing. Why put vague sayings into an agreement. At least say what you mean!
We've been doing longs and shorts in our office for years now but our finishing times don't differ by more than 30 minutes from one day to the next, but up to 2 hours! We do have a life outside of RM to organise which shouldn't be dependent on the "traffic profile".
Varying daily hourage by up to 30 minutes on a voluntary basis just doesn't add up. If it is going to be purely voluntary why stop at 30 minutes, why not 1 or 2 hours. I have no doubt that this is going to be used to cut out overtime. Pressure will be put on individuals to work over for no money. I and many others can quite easily say no to the boss when asked to work over but I know there are many others who do what they're told through fear of incurring the bosses displeasure. As a union we take into account everybody's situation and not only our own.
There are far too many issues being left to local agreements. Ok so ther will always be some element of local agreement in any deal but what is being proposed is going to leave many offices out in the cold. This deal was being negotiated from a position of strength, but to read it you would think we were on the verge of caving in and taking what was on offer with a couple sweetners.
If this is the best Billy Hayes and Dave Ward can do, then when this deal is rejected they should resign. I am sure in our union we have many skilled negotiators who could get us a better deal and without being paid such vast sums of money.
I am the rep in our office and I am advising everyone to vote NO.

NO PAY CUT

NO LOCAL AGREEMENTS

NO INTIMIDATION

NO SURRENDER

I said I would vote YES several days ago and some knuckle dragger assumed quite wrongly that I was a scab.

Although I will vote YES it will not be because I think the Union have done a good job. Nor will I pander to the likes of Dave Ward and say what a wonderful job he has done.

The campaign, as usual, has been a disaster much like the NO vote for IA three years ago.

You Lovejoy pontificate and say that WE should be coming up with alternatives but quite frankly I believe the UNION should have had plans to counter Royal Mails strategy because we pay them to conduct our business.

Please lets not have political or union ambition be mistaken for leadership or claim a victory. The lesson every member should have learned from this debacle is, if you want a job doing vote in those who can and will fight. The elections for union posts are in 2008, make that vote count. The vote for the political fund is any time now - in fact it wouldn't surprise me if the political fund vote wasn't in the same envelope - make that vote count. There is no way we should be supporting Gordon Brown, unlike the sychophant who thinks the Labour Party listens to him.

I can take it. Thats what a union is all about - being able to voice your opinion
NO the union is about standing together to protect and improve our terms and conditions .

This deal is a charter for the destruction of the CWU postal section .
Local agreement ,local trials ,area rep discussion, total fragmentation and ultimately capitulation.
Deja vu ,Way FORward , is your status raised? do you get the national average wage?

Feel free to quote me in just 18months and say i told you it was a good deal. Bet my left leg you dont
Ah the old I told you so line. Anyone could say that and I agree this agreement will be difficult for members. ALL major national agreements are!

As I have previously stated it is easy to attack the document. We could all do that with no problem at all.

What is not so easy is putting your neck on the line and giving your views on our tactics and aims from here! Lets here some views on that from you Belial
YES told a rep last year the way forward was'nt worth the paper it was written on and we would get screwed soon, his reply "you're naive and stupid this is a good solid deal protecting us into the future"

I Agree the document is very very easy to attack. By the way I'm not frustrated with developments ,I am angry. I can see however why someone in your position who has known ,respected and trusted Mr WArd for years might find it difficult to accept he has failed us, it is a very bitter pill to swallow and one that challenges long held beliefs and loyalties. The crux is ,at the risk of repeating myself ,how are we better off, any idea?

Neck on the line time, bit dramatic but oh well. Some views:

Tactics:
reinstate rolling action untill satisfactory resolution.

True 20% loss of pay but still less of a loss in real terms than accepting this agreement considering pay cut ,pension cut, extra hours, D2d fiasco. Not to mention loss of quality of life .Flexibility, longs and shorts 30hrs/50hrs, what about attendance procedure? How strong is your rep? An ambitious managers carte blanche.

Full transparency of all negotiations, let the membership know what is being discussed, commercial sensetivity is not the unions concern.

Full accountabillity , minutes and voting records published as soon as practical, our representatives should have nothing to hide/be ashamed of. If they believe their actions are justified they should be willing to present their argument and convince the membership.

A professional prosecution of all IA. Remember to name all offices involved and numbers expected out. Legal screw ups do not inspire confidence, deliberate or not?

AIMS: where do i start, some things to go on

Basically an overall improvement in our terms and conditions

Embrace new technology to aim for an improved service, and facillitate ultimately a 35- 30 hr week for the average wage. now thats what i call modern and progressive.
True flexibillity allowing for members personal circumstances.
An end to the attendance code that permits harrassment of members for genuine health reasons ie heart problems diabetes cancer all recorded on this site
Set in stone the pension benefits that we signed a binding contract for
Stop subsidising the mega multi billion pound profit of our "real customers", they need the service they can afford above bargain basement rates
Expose the Postcomm con and end privatisation by stealth and asset stripping

Not an exhaustive list but something to get your teeth into. Give me five months of talks an I'll come up with lots more

Lovejoy,
Appologies for calling you a tad nieve, certainly never meant to cause offence.
What i was trying to say was,i feel that once the agreement is voted in, as sadly i
think it will, history tells us that any opposition from the union, either nationaly
or locally will be totally disregarded.
When in the future the CWU fall foul of RM (probably over the pension proposals),
i fear any call to action from it's members will fall on deaf ears.
Regarding my having F..k em head on. what i meant was i was trying to be
objective, and not have my f..k em head on.

I really don't know what the solution is, i only hope that we don't leave
ourselves wide open to RM bullyboy tactics. :confused

Maybe you have explained your reasons elsewhere but I can't understand why you want to vote YES.

I know that there is a very good chance the union appaartus, despite having signed up for one of the worst deals in its history, will manage to organise a Yes vote but it hasn't achieved its goal yet. At the very least I want the no vote to be as big as possible.

What matters is what we do. After totally supporting the strike official and unofficial, after voting with my feet and in mass meetings at the gate, I now have nothing better to do than voting NO in a postal ballot is pretty depressing but its what I am going to do and its what I am encouraging other posties to do.
