My god, it sounds like the Royal Mail heaven described to me by old timers. It still exists.

Sometimes with smaller offices, it's not feasible to have park and loop for many reasons, small office, no yArds maybe a bike shed unless they ride it home, nature of delivery area such as small villages and countryside, delivery hours fully utilised leaving no down time etc etc.
Guess they are the lucky ones.
Other offices like mine gets hammered as there is scope to implement changes.

Smaller office will be coming to you very soon or they to bigger offices land grab by the sell off merchants at royalmail.NWpostie wrote:Sometimes with smaller offices, it's not feasible to have park and loop for many reasons, small office, no yArds maybe a bike shed unless they ride it home, nature of delivery area such as small villages and countryside, delivery hours fully utilised leaving no down time etc etc.

Royal Mail don't own the Sub Post Offices behind which the smallest Delivery Offices are situated and so there's no possibility of a "land grab by the sell off merchants at royalmail"k979aaa wrote:Smaller office will be coming to you very soon or they to bigger offices land grab by the sell off merchants at royalmail.NWpostie wrote:Sometimes with smaller offices, it's not feasible to have park and loop for many reasons, small office, no yArds maybe a bike shed unless they ride it home, nature of delivery area such as small villages and countryside, delivery hours fully utilised leaving no down time etc etc.

Our office had a part revision about 5 years ago, we all received revision payment, we have approx. 40 walks and about 75% are covered by posties on bikes, so laggyband your not the only office. On the other hand our office is in a town centre and very very limited on parking so park and loop is out of the question and not allowed to take vans home.

Within the next decade I wouldn't be surprised to see every DO that can't handle a 17 ton lorry be either relocated to a larger site or merged into a DO that can

Ten years ago they were saying that all the little Delivery Offices, in villages and small towns, would be relocated to a town or larger town but half of them still survive.SpacePhoenix wrote:Within the next decade I wouldn't be surprised to see every DO that can't handle a 17 ton lorry be either relocated to a larger site or merged into a DO that can

Don't expect them to last for ever, in my area West Midlands 2 small depots have been relocated to bigger offices, they had been at there previous location for ever, the reason for closure lack of space. RM are really going down the parcel route at the moment so expect parcels to increase massively .

Someone has touched on the issue; we are trapped here in a way.
Our last batch of mail arrives at 7am so we like to be out the door at 8.
Very occasionally we are out earlier as sometimes the last batch comes with the first. On these days, we can be outside when it is still dark during winter months.
The lapsing issue is one where, we are not by default immune from it, but in reality it becomes very difficult to ask the office to do it when you are relying on them either using their own car to do a loop or asking them to bike two miles or more for a handful of letters, and get back.
The other side of it is, the office is only really operational because the posties just get on with it. Any number of rules could be raised to cause huge problems here.
I wouldn't say it is all fun and games though.
Using bikes with today's mail can be difficult, and we don't like to simply dump parcels out for the driver if we can help it.
@frankyboy - nice to hear we're not the only ones :)

I understand the Bridport Delivery Office still uses Cycles, and they've still got the Old PDAs!
