UBS said even the possibility of strike action over Christmas may drive customers to consider using other delivery firms

nalysts at UBS have downgraded Royal Mail PLC (LON:RMG) to ‘sell’ ahead of possible strike action later this year with the delivery giant and its workers “a long way apart” on the key issues of pay and pensions.

A ballot on whether to strike or not could happen next month, according to Dominic Edridge, if a mutually agreeable resolution can’t be found in those two areas.

A September ballot could see Royal Mail workers potentially walk out over the key Christmas period.

Given that the company makes around £15mln in profit during that holiday season, it could be a very expensive strike for Royal Mail.

“There is the chance of a negotiated settlement given the proposed time scale is for a ballot in late September (with further talks planned for the end of next week),” wrote Edridge in a note to clients this morning.

“However, it also means that strikes could happen over the crucial Christmas period.”

The UBS analyst acknowledges that there aren’t too many alternatives for sending letters, but thinks that even the possibility of industrial action might lead to customers looking at other delivery firms for their parcels.

On top of the downgrade, Edridge cut his price target to 390p from 410p.

That’s slightly below where the shares find themselves at today; they’re currently 0.3% in the red at 397p.

Sorry But I take offence at this.

I post both pro and anti-Royal Mail stories, as I do for our competitors, and both Unions, its part of providing a forum for discussing things that have an effect on us all.

I will now ask you to remove this scurrilous accusation, or at least apologise for it.

TBT seldom posts news items accompanied by his personal views on them. Why you chose this news item to make your maiden post here is beyond my limited powers of comprehension.

Just last weekend TBT posted the unredacted article (originally in The Mail) re Moya Greene. To the general public this was very praiseworthy.

By all means exercise your 'constitutional right' to make comment about the content of such articles and leave the sledging to the cricket field!

Bertieboo, may I remind you, if it wasn't for the CWU, we would not have a decent wage, terms of conditions and a decent pension.

Royal Mail have already conceded on monthly and sick pay. Why? Because of the CWU!

TBT is nuteral, and spends a lot of time contributing to this site.

And for what it's worth, I have a morgage and bills to pay. And my wife is not well enough to work. I will be voting to strike. This is a battle we cannot afford to LOSE!

I believe it was always Royal Mails intention to concede on monthly pay and first 3 days sick and probably more to come. All the ludicrous little changes to t&c's were thrown in amongst the big plans so they could be taken off the table last minute and make it look like there had been some progress made. I have little doubt that most people seen through this at the beginning though, for example. In the RMTV propaganda they made us watch, they pointed out what was being taken off the table. However, they didn't highlight a single thing that was being kept. I actually have no clue myself now and will have to back read the posts on here to find out. They told us how much we would be gaining in their revision of the pension plan from their original proposal, but not a mention of how much we'd actually be losing from the plan were on now. They're just throwing herring's everywhere so no-one is well informed of what they'll actually be balloting for.

This for me is something that has to be urgently addressed by the CWU to all of its members. We're not being well informed and this could lose us the votes when needed.

The postman, in all due respect did you not receive and read the book from The Royal mail, explaining in great depth and detail how much less pension you will receive in comparison with their so called new pension scheme?

It will cost me just over £2000 a year! A considerable sum.

Did you not receive the letters from your union the CWU explaining the changes The Royal Mail wish to make to your terms and conditions?

I believe , The Royal Mail agreeing to pay full sick pay is a major concession .

I read somewhere, and please someone on the forum correct me if I am wrong, The Royal Mail if they paid part sick pay would save 100 million pounds a year! That is a huge saving in monetary terms. And they would have been loathed to have stopped that.

But thanks from pressure from the CWU they made in my opinion a major concession.

One I agree RM are disingenuous about the future of the RMPP but all this talk of sick pay and monthly pay was a diversion tactic the real bunny is the pipeline most postmen/women do not even know what the pipeline is but in plain terms it is a means to an end ie item into system gets delivered! But royal mail wants latter acceptance times to compete with other firms and they must for our job's but they want to do it on the cheep instead of being the best the idea behind all this is pushing everything back including start times so instead of starting at 06:30 it may be 09:00 and your finish time may be 16:48 pm nearly five O'clock may even be later!
