Moving with the times
The only way timed slots could ever work is if we have delivery posties to go out and deliver the mail and small packets and specialist delivery drivers to go out and deliver the large/medium packets, specials and perhaps these new timed delivery parcels and/or letters as well. That used to be the case years ago but RM wanted to cut back on the number of duties.
I'm not against moving with the times because we should be attracting business wherever we can but the Royal Mail model really needs to be reformed before we can began to start accepting timed delivery slots.

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

But "specialist delivery drivers to go out and deliver the large/medium packets, specials and perhaps these new timed delivery parcels and/or letters as well" would add a considerable amount of time and miles doubling back to return to the same village or part of town for a 9am to 11am packet delivery, then for an 11am to 1pm packet delivery, then for a 1pm to 3pm packet delivery and then for a 3pm to 5pm packet delivery.postslippete wrote:The only way timed slots could ever work is if we have delivery posties to go out and deliver the mail and small packets and specialist delivery drivers to go out and deliver the large/medium packets, specials and perhaps these new timed delivery parcels and/or letters as well. The nearest to that Royal Mail does is the 9am Special Delivery which is presumably priced accordingly and so is very little used.

But what time does the DPD driver Finnish on a Sunday ?![]()
We didn't mind Saturdays when it was home by noon but we're not happy with a mid Saturday afternoon Finnish.
They have no set time its get your parcels delivered then you can go home

by the way no reason why RM cant offer a guaranteed next day service and for people to choose a 1 hour time window all for a premium price. I think a lot of people would use this type of service. Also how about evening deliverys for premium rate parcels, again a guaranteed 1 hour window between 5pm and 10pm (you know the times when people are actually in) ? People dont want to go to the local delivery office everytime to get their 739s, how about on the same evening service we redeliver 739s for a fee (or you can still have it redelivered at no extra cost during normal delivery hours)
Add to that Sunday deliveries (for these same products, not regular deliveries) again for extra fees, I could imagine a lot of 739s could be redelivered and would also take strain off of delivery offices. These ideas seem so simple, are extra revenue streams, make the overall delivery product better for the customer and dont require lots of distruption for everyone - just 1 or 2 people to work a later shift per office (depending on size and demand)
Do RM have anyone in management coming up with ideas like this or do they just think about how best to cut costs all the time while reducing service for our customers ?

But that's five separate one hour slots between 5pm and 10pm so we could be returning to the same street five times during the evening and to each of many other streets across the town five times during the evening, the mileage would be considerable, maybe only several parcels per hour would be delivered, so the necessary cost per parcel would be prohibitively high and it wouldn't work.Postie45 wrote:by the way no reason why RM cant offer a guaranteed next day service and for people to choose a 1 hour time window all for a premium price. The most efficient way is everything ( letters, door to doors, packets, parcels ) all delivered together as we've been doing for a few years.

yes in the worse case scenario you paint it might not work, on the other hand you could have 1 timed parcel in street A and about 4 or 5 739 redeiiveries in the same close area then another timed delivery slot in location B and some more parcels around there and so on....
"The most efficient way is everything ( letters, door to doors, packets, parcels ) all delivered together as we've been doing for a few years"
im not talking about efficiency timescale wise, im talking about offering a premium product which can also lead to other products being offered, could be very profitable

It's no use speculating on "the worse case scenario" against "on the other hand you could have ....." you need properly thought out proposals taking into account the extra time and mileage per parcel against the extra price that would need to be charged and whether customers would be prepared to pay the extra.Postie45 wrote:yes in the worse case scenario you paint it might not work, on the other hand you could have 1 timed parcel in street A and about 4 or 5 739 redeiiveries in the same close area then another timed delivery slot in location B and some more parcels around there and so on....

Royal Mail already offers "a premium product" which is 9am Special Delivery starting at £20 and given that I'm currently delivering about one of them a month I don't think it's much of a money spinner for Moya.

You could have it so the parcel could be delivered earlier than the window if the opportunity presented itself ie; the delivery worker was in the vicinity of your address at an earlier time. If the parcel is successfully delivered then great, if not, then no card is left and the delivery worker must attempt again during the allotted delivery window. That way there is a chance the customer gets the parcel early and if not they'll still get the paid for time window instead.Lounge Lizard wrote: But that's five separate one hour slots between 5pm and 10pm so we could be returning to the same street five times during the evening and to each of many other streets across the town five times during the evening, the mileage would be considerable, maybe only several parcels per hour would be delivered, so the necessary cost per parcel would be prohibitively high and it wouldn't work.
