Royal Mail should never have been privatised. I thought it was a service that should be taken for granted by the community like the council bin men, water utility companies and the likes and therefore shouldn't have had to make a profit. It's being absolutely destroyed by the shareholders wanting more and more from a company that is highly inefficient at making money. But that's just my thoughts on the matter.

One thing I would like to ask the Royal Mail board is when they constantly remind us that other delivery companies terms and conditions are not as attractive as ours why do they not mention the CEO of these companies and their board members are on considerable less favourable terms of the Royal Mail equivalents.Perhaps they should set an example and cut their own terms and conditions before they preach to us !!

Best summing up of the whole failed business and it's plan of self destruction even Philip Green could not run a pension scheme and a company down so quick at least he has made some amends and yet these clowns still carry on like it does not apply to them! :arrrghhh

Given all of the board are from private sector companies, are they actually interested in Royal Mail? I personally don't think so and I think the facts speak for themselves for the lack of innovation and imagination when it comes to new products and services. They have nothing new offer except cut, cut and cut. Chipping away at our pension pot to pay dividends means no new money is coming in, a vital warning of the direction these people are pushing the company.

The up and coming industrial action is fully justified and needs to happen and we need to hit shareholders in the pocket before someone says "get this sorted".

Adding to this, IF you do have faith then explain your reasons for this.
Why do you think you need to hit shareholders in the pocket? Allot of pensions are invested in ftse companies and rely upon the divs. I suppose you give yours away do you? Won't be long before moya trots off to become CEO of easy jet IMHO and we'll get another CEO who just do the rounds of the ftse companies with no experience of what the company actually does. Don't crucify the shareholders though, the traders btw don't actually make money from the divs they just make theirs from, well, trading . The good guys like you, me, pensions get the divs. All this hang the nasty shareholders stuff is very narrow minded, with respect. Pretty much all ftse companies give divs. It's a reward for investors showing faith in the company. If rmg stopped paying them we'd be on a slippery slope mate.

Just as a matter of interest, according to the Office for National Statistics, in 2010 only 5.1% of UK listed shares were owned by pension funds. The pension funds are all invested in zero % interest government bonds these days.
'Rest of World' investors accounted for 41.2% - and a staggering 44.9 per cent of the shares by value were held in multiple ownership pooled accounts where the beneficial owner is unknown !!

Reach your own conclusions as to whom RMG profits are being dispersed amongst.

1 A lot of people these days have to fund there own pensions from lumps sums.
2 People that have accidents in work and get lump sum.
3 Serviceman injured getting paid off.
4 People that work hard and have savings to invest.
5 Royal Mail employees

All these types of people invest in shares these days.

As interests rates are so low more and more people are using the stock market.

As Royal Mail pay a healthy dividend they are favoured by many of the above.

This fella reportedly owns 5.8 million shares
The Children's Investment Fund run by philanthropist Chris Hohn
Hedge fund has taken a 5.8 per cent stake in the postal service
He is also one of the UK’s leading philanthropists, having given an estimated £800m to children’s charities since 2003.
Maybe his dividends help fund childrens charities

Individuals owned 11.5% in the 2010 study.

I just had a thought - why doesn't the RMG pension invest in RMG shares ? This makes sense on many different levels. I suppose they do indirectly already with index tracking funds - but what about direct ownership ? That way we are no longer working for the man (Wall Street/the City) but working in our own interests - and the pension fund gets a boost from a profitable co. with a good p/e ratio. I think someone upthread said the divi. was about 5% - how does this compare to the shite bonds the pension scheme is currently over invested in ?

Div works out at 5% that's why its attractive to lots of different people.
You'd think a deal could be done with the Unions to give more shares to the workers as some kind of pension workaround !
The more shares the workers have the more they feel part of the company.

Ps
Re bonds.
Yep - Apparently RM pension fund is 87% Bonds.
Maybe instead of reducing the pensions they need to rethink their investment strategy.

Park & Loop is inefficient. At the time, staff could't understand why RM were giving away all their cycles to people in Africa and stopping posties from doing their deliveries in the cars and then spending millions of pounds on investing in more RM vans which then use gallons of petrol and need to be serviced and maintained. I get the unique idea of trolleys in taking weight off the shoulder but all those packets we are doing now used to be done by specialist drivers who did packets; the posties themselves just posted the letters and the small packets. Working in pairings is inefficient and I suspect RM have found that one out when one postie happens to be sitting and waiting at the van waiting for the other one and then on the next loop, vice versa! I also don't understand RM strategy on the letters. We are told that they managing the decline in letters but then on the other hand why spend millions of pounds investing in CSS machines and training ex-posties how to use them? Now RM have suggested that we could all 'own' our delivery round, work a 9 to 5 with changes in sick pay and for all their talk about the 'gig economy', one wonders if what they want, what they really, really want is for us all to be part of their 'gig economy'?

If it ain't broke why try and fix it?
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

I can assure you that my Royal Mail pension fund isn't 100% invested in zero interest government bonds! It's actually about 80% invested in equities. I can't help wondering if the ONS' definition of "pension fund" is/was "defined benefit pension scheme" rather then "all uk pensions"?
jetblack wrote:'Rest of World' investors accounted for 41.2%
With the ONS' unhelpfully failing to split out (granted because they probably couldn't) what percentage of those "rest of world' investors where in fact foreign pension funds?
jetblack wrote:and a staggering 44.9 per cent of the shares by value were held in multiple ownership pooled accounts where the beneficial owner is unknown !!
So quite possibly unit trusts, investment trusts and maybe even people's defined contribution pensions (depending on the ONS' definition), not to mention people's individual holdings which will in the main be held in nominee accounts. Any or all of which might be intended for funding people's retirements. And it could get quite complicated - what if I have a SIPP (Self-Invested Personal Pension for those that don't know what that means) in which I've invested money in (e.g.) City of London Investment Trust? That's probably not going to show up in the ONS' figures as "pension fund"! Even worse, if for some bizarre reason I've invested my SIPP money in a foreign fund which then invests (at least partially) back into the UK then what the ONS is calling "foreign investor" is actually "uk pension fund", though granted there aren't many reasons for doing something like that.
