Carlisle vehicle operating centre (VOC) has passed 1,000 days without a reportable accident and is already well on its way to the next safety milestone.

Proud VOC manager Donald Bell says: ‘I heard that the centre in Woking had passed this landmark achievement, so we had a look and discovered we were over 1,100.’

The centre operates around the clock as a switching point for HGVs picking up and dropping off trailers and is particularly busy due to its location near the Scottish border.

Donald puts the VOC’s impressive record down to the professionalism of its 31 employees, frequent one-to-one meetings and close monitoring of work practices.

‘We have a big focus on safety here and we do two yard inspections a week,’ he said. ‘If there is anything untoward, colleagues report it so we can take action.

‘They also challenge each other when they see unsafe behaviour, as every vehicle movement in here is a potential accident.’

One of many contributory factors is paying close attention to safety in the key period of 5am to 7am. That’s when shifts change over and there is a spike in vehicle movements.

‘Everybody in every role takes the same approach to safety,’ said office administrator Ian Parker. ‘We run a tight ship and keep an eye on each other, but everyone is really good and you hardly ever have to pull anyone up on anything.’

Q: What is the difference between a reportable accident and an unreportable accident?

A:Probably the same as in my office where "we"dont have accidents "we" only have incidents and very rarely at that.
