Postie suspended for wanting to keep earlier deliveries

A POSTMAN has been suspended after he failed to comply with new rules that ordered him to deliver his letters later than usual.

David Pearce, 59, has been doing his rounds in the Woking area for the past nine years. His base is the sorting offices in Robin Hood Road, Knaphill, where he sorts his mail in the early hours before jumping on his bike to complete his daily rounds.

Mr Pearce and his colleagues used to start work at 5.30am but were recently told their shift had been altered, with a new start time of 6am. Staff were happy to accept this new rule.

But now the posties have been told that after sorting their post between 6 and about 8.30am, they have to wait until 9.30am to start their rounds. Mr Pearce said that it had been suggested that the postmen could take their meal break between 8.30 and 9.30am.

Mr Pearce told the News and Mail he was aware of new legislation that Royal Mail has to adhere to, regarding speed restrictions placed on its vehicles but said he had not been told why he cannot start his deliveries at 8.30am, as he did previously.

He said: “Royal Mail is stopping postmen from starting work until 9.30am. At 6am we sort our post and that takes a couple of hours or so. Usually I would start delivering at around 8.30am but Royal Mail has instructed us in Knaphill and Woking not to start until 9.30am.

“I can’t believe the instruction as there is no reason. They have told us to start later without saying why. I have been suspended for failure to obey a direct instruction.â€
