Scanning barcodes (from new starter)
On the job training has been rather poor so far and I haven't had the following answered properly. Should we be attempting to scan ALL barcodes on our PDAs or only certain ones - and if only certain ones then which ones? I tried scanning almost every barcode I came across on my first day unsupervised, and to my surprise about 90% scanned, including many which looked as though they wouldn't.
Any information please?

2D squares, or 13 digit ones starting with two letters and ending with two letters. Don't bother with the rest as even though they will scan they don't mean anything.

Ask your workplace coach to show you on packets what to scan and what not. You will learn quickly these things, if you don`t know something, always ask someone. It`s not a shame to ask :)paul39222 wrote:On the job training has been rather poor so far and I haven't had the following answered properly. I am a newbie too. I wasn't sure either. I was told by someone that most internationals do not need scanning. Well thankfully I decided to scan them anyway...and they were ones that not only needed scanning but also required signatures!paul39222 wrote:On the job training has been rather poor so far and I haven't had the following answered properly. What I want to know now is if we can't scan the barcodes, how do we put the codes in manually?

Press manage outdoor, then press ad hoc delivery. That gives you a space you can select to manually pump the number inInterested-seeker wrote:I am a newbie too. I wasn't sure either. The 2d or 13 digit barcodes are really the only ones you need to scan, the rest are really for the posting company's internal data.
Try and get the 2D ones scanned primarily, failing that then it's the 13 digit barcode. If neither scan then you have to manually enter the 13 digits.
But scan ALL mail with barcodes, keep yourself right.

Some of the parcels have bar codes but those are for internal use and when you scan them, you get a different beep then when you scan tracked or signed for for example.Interested-seeker wrote:I am a newbie too. In short time you will know the difference, but if you are not sure, scan everything :)
If a 2D barcode or a smuged tracked won`t scan, just do it manually like above :)

Training is poor? Shocker haha.
Just comes with experiance: you learn what to look for. Anything 2d needs scanning; anything 1d that is tracked needs scanning. Obviously specials. As somebody said above, Royal Mail codes start with 2 letters and end with 2 letters. The last 2 refer to country of origin: gb for Britain, CN for China US ect ect. You should scan internationals, you can get away with not though. Loads in my office don't, particularly if they'll go through the letterbox. You can also get away with not scanning signed fors, they're not tracked through the system in the same way tracked and specials are.
I scan everything I can to cover my back though, it's never good to cut corners as you'll find many do.

You can. Tap "Manage Outdoor" at the bottom of the screen, then choose "Ad-Hoc Delivery" from the following menu. Then, you can type in the long string of numbers and letters that appear above the 2D barcode. BUT, you have to leave out any hyphens or spaces for it to work (so you type in a string of numbers and letters without any gaps or special characters).woody38 wrote:U can't do 2d par codes manually.

Thanks to all for your replies. But none of you mentioned the key point which I only found out last week - maybe because you thought it was too obvious: as a rule, we only scan bar codes on parcels, not letters! It may seem obvious to an experienced postman, but for someone totally new this was a revelation.

I scan the horizon ones (they're the ones the post office print), that are either gold or white in colour. The ones in the window on some letters I don't scan.paul39222 wrote:Thanks to all for your replies.
