Council considering communal letter boxes to deal with post strike

CAERPHILLY council is considering introducing ground-level communal letter boxes to flats on a Risca street which has had its post services suspended.

After nearly three weeks, Royal Mail is still refusing to deliver post to residents on Holly Road due to “crime in the area”.

At a packed public meeting, councillor and cabinet member Nigel George, and cllr Philippa Leonard, said that communal letter boxes for each block of flats is now being considered.

If introduced, it is understood Royal Mail will resume post deliveries to the street.

Cllr Leonard - who also chaired the meeting at St David’s Church - said the ground-level postal plan was “just a suggestion at the moment”.

“We hope that is given the go-ahead,” she said.

“It would involve letter boxes being placed at the bottom of the stairs with keys attached.

“That way postmen would not have to visit individuals flats.”

Resident Claire Harris, who attended the meeting, urged the council to proceed.

“We need these ASAP because this has been weeks that we’ve been without post,” she said.

“It’s ridiculous and it cannot be justified. I want the council to get on with it.”

Chester Chaffey, who also lives on Holy Road, said the “post ban” needed lifting “immediately”.

“God knows if I’ve missed my hospital appointment,” added Mr Chaffey.

“I like the sound of ground-level letter boxes.

“I don’t know how they’ll fit them in here though because of the big stairwells.”

Royal Mail spokeswoman Sally Hopkins said: “We continue to work with the council to find a way to resume deliveries safely to addresses in Holly Road.

“One option we have suggested would be for the council to install mail boxes on the ground floors of the blocks of flats.

“We understand the council is currently considering this.”

The issues began when postmen were threatened and had items thrown at them on June 15.

Police were then seen escorting postal workers in what was deemed an “initial reassurance measure for postal employees”, but deliveries were halted once again when a worker was “verbally abused” by a resident.
