A FIT and healthy postman who loves his job has accused the Royal Mail of ageism over its insistence that he must retire on reaching his 65th birthday.

Noel McDonagh, of Llantwit Major, whose birthday is in December, said, â€œI have been a conscientious, reliable and trustworthy postman for the past seven years and now Royal Mail wants to get rid of me. My only transgression is reaching the grand age of 65.

â€œI am extremely fit for my age and I enjoy the job immensely. How can a supposed pillar of our society be allowed to treat their people in this way?

â€œI have been right to the top to try to get this decision reversed, without success. They operate the Age Discrimination Act to the letter, with no grey areas.â€

He spent 22 years in the RAF, so, firstly, why if he's fit and conscientious isn't he still in the RAF seeking to carry on his service with them after 65, and, secondly, why does he still seek a full time income in addition to his substantial service pension, state pension and probably other incomes too ?

You can only stay in the forces to a maximum of age 55. Perhaps he has pride in wanting to work beyond retirement. Horses for courses.

Perhaps he didn't, we simply don't know - however with IRAQ, FRY, Afghanistan and all the other deployments going on at the moment and when he was in, he did not want to serve any more.

But it'll be fine for the old codger to use his zimmer frame to help him along with his eight 16kg pouches of mail a day and all his door to doors, apart from which few airmen see a Tornado let alone try to get inside one.

"You can only stay in the farces to a maximum of age 55" is apparently accepted without question but why then is 'you can only stay with the Royal Mail to a maximum age of 65' made out to be unreasonable ? Double standards we could do without on this discussion forum.
And some might question why some old codger who has had a full working life should carry on working when there are plenty of fit young East Europeans who would be keen to jump in his work shoes at the drop of a hat.
