Two people allegedly posing as Post Office managers for more than two years are believed to have made off with almost £50,000.
The pair – believed to have been a husband and wife – vanished from the Post Office in High Littleton high street last week.
The couple allegedly made an application for the management role using a fake ID in the name of the postmaster 29 months ago.
It is believed they syphoned money from the Post Office from that date, making cash orders from the central distribution hub and simply keeping the money.
It is alleged the audacious couple even stopped paying their rent to the property owner four months ago, which prompted the eventual discovery of their fraud.
The landlord reportedly suffered a period of ill health and the couple were safe in the knowledge he would not drop in on them to demand rent.
However, a month ago he apparently served the tenants notice and demand they leave within 28 days.
The situation is said to have come to a head last week when the couple called a late night meeting to beg to be allowed to stay in the job and on the premises.
When that request was rejected it is believed they brazenly admitted their fraudulent crime.
It is claimed the property owner contacted Post Office Limited who advised him to contact the police.
In the meantime, the couple have allegedly fled to London, taking the key to the flat with them.
An anonymous source said: “All investigating bodies know where they are. They lived in the flat above the Post Office.
“They know the law and they’re abusing it.”
One customer, who doesn't want to be named, said he was totally shocked: "It's a well-used Post Office and it is a really tight knit community here so everyone is devastated.
“Things like that don't happen round here so everyone is shocked."
Unsurprisingly, there are reports the couple has been dismissed by Post Office
An employee at the High Littleton convenience store where the Post Office is based said Post Office services have been temporarily suspended at the branch while the investigation is ongoing - including National Lottery services and scratch cards amid rumours those had been taken too.
An investigation by Post Office is believed to be ongoing.
A Post Office spokesperson said; “We would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of High Littleton Post Office. This is due to operational reasons. We are working hard to restore services to the area as soon as possible. In the meantime Post Office services may be accessed from any convenient Post Office branch”
