Royal Mail worker claims Grays Delivery Office strike was due to staff being at 'breaking point'

A Royal Mail worker has spoken out after an impromptu strike meant the Grays Delivery Office was closed for three hours yesterday.

The experienced employee, who has asked to remain anonymous to protect his job, said about 80 staff took part in the sit-down in the delivery office and were threatened with legal action if they didn't move.

He said: "It has been a longstanding problem we have had with management and the staff are just really fed up.

"We don't have enough staff to deal with the volume of mail coming through the office.

"There's mail piling up that isn't getting delivered. There's Father's Day cards still sat there because of poor management and it's not good enough.

"The management are responsible for the poor service and then we get the flack for it and they tell us we're not doing a good enough job.

"We're all at breaking point. We've just had enough because we want to do a good job for the public but we're not being given the right tools to do that."

Customers were queuing out the door early yesterday morning as staff were striking and eventually the doors were locked and a sign put up apologising for the 'unforeseen industrial action'.

The Royal Mail source added: "We've got people who've been here for 35 years but they are being treated like dirt. Things have to change."

The strike came to an end after the employees decided to get back to work so the public could get their mail.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Mail said: "There was a very short period of unballoted industrial action at Grays delivery office earlier yesterday morning."

"All staff went back to work and all mail deliveries are being made as usual today."

They have been contacted to respond to the comments made by the employee.

The source also claims the company have introduced longer delivery walks for postal workers but have banned overtime so staff are not able to complete their deliveries within the allocated shifts.

Royal Mail spokesman Morag Turnbull said: "There is no truth that there is a ban on overtime at Grays Delivery Office. Unfortunately, unballoted industrial action took place for a very short time yesterday morning. Staff went back to work and mail deliveries were made as normal.

"Royal Mail has implemented new revised way of working recently in Grays Delivery Office and is fully committed to the process of trying to resolve concerns of postal workers by following the national jointly agreed framework with the Communication Workers Union (CWU)."
