With this Yodel, Hermes lark, if the owner of the route is charged for the service if he is off sick or on holiday, who actually receives the rewards for the work. ie who is being paid for the per parcel rate?. If it is not the owner of the route, then Yodel, Hermes are not only being paid by the customer, but are also being paid by the route owner, so are in effect being paid twice and still only paying out once for the van hire and casual/agency labour. So effectively they are better off when you are sick or on holiday.

Id imagine the driver has to pay the difference of what it costs to pay an employment agency to find a temporary worker to complete the vacant duty for the day. compared to what they earnt per parcel at the agreed rate with their owner driver. And have just standardised the fee in their favour using averages.

If x amount of work comes in the door you will get x amount of hours ( and therefore pay ) to cover it. How long you take is your business, in what order it gets done is your business, how you manage your breaks and the delivery span is your business but you'll still only get x amount of pay at the end of it.

It's already ready like that for an awful lot of people.

Yes that is exactly how it is done the service partner gets his cut per parcel and bills his driver for the agency fee Yodel have used to clear the workload so if the driver has gone sick last minute he still gets his payment for what was delivered on his route but has to hand it straight over to Yodel to pay for the agency cover as he didn't arrange cover himself and knowing the cost of agency fees he is probably well out of pocket !
