Hospital Appointments

Got told today that in future all appointments should be made outside of work hours if not then, swap day off or take a days leave or if unable take a days special leave wiuthout pay,is this nationwide or is it our temp manager trying his luck, funnily enough he had an argument with one lad yesterday over an appointment for today.

If a Royal mails managers lips are moving there is a 99.999% chance he is lying. You could always ask how are you meant to book appointments on your day off when you only find them out the Friday before. Sometimes I get appointments 3 months in advance.

Hospital appointments generally are not made by you they come from the hospital themselves and any manager with a degree of common sense should realise this. Hospital appointments where you will be seen by a specialist for a diagnosis or a pre-op are fitted in with the specialists schedule not RM shift patterns and in this instance if unable to have the time off to attend and you have explored various methods of a swap or time clawback and this is found to be difficult then the business should accommodate you to attend your appointment time without having to encroach into your annual leave and in most cases should be paid. Hospital appointments to an out-patient departments should be able to be managed outwith your work hours unless you are seeing the specialist who dealt with you in the first instance has set times at the out-patients department. Its basically what the individual circumstances are.

Ad hoc medical and dental appointments: If you’re unable to get a medical or dental appointment outside
of working hours, speak to your manager to decide whether you can change your shift or make up the time.
In some circumstances where that’s not possible, you may get paid time off.
