In the 1970s we nearly went broke to the extent we had to borrow money from the imf just to pay our basic bills. The country was in a right mess and inflation was touching 25%.
The Tories have already borrowed £1.79 trillion, more than all Lab governments
The national debt is around £1.79 trillion. It wasn't just borrowed by the Tories . Labour were in office for quite a few years and besides a huge amount of that was used to stop the financial markets collapsing nine years ago. Borrowing money is fine if you can service the debt, but what if the economy goes in decline due to us leaving the common market. What then? Interest rates rises ,government spending is curtailed, jobs go homes are repossessed and hey ho we're back to square one
We are already back to square one, courtesy of the Tories and their friends in the City/Wall Street.

Interest rates will only rise when the economy starts to pick up. The economy is currently depressed, thus current 0% interest rates - and government spending is currently curtailed.
If the economy goes further downhill then interest rates will go down, not up - taking us into negative interest rate territory. ie. you are paying the bank to hold your money. Sounds crazy but this is actually happening in certain economies.
Therefore, if the economy declines the ability of Govt.s to service debt is generally not impeded to the extent that it might first appear.

On top of borrowing Govt.s have at their disposal the magical ability to create more money (out of thin air) and to push this into the system (its called Quantitative Easing). The Conservatives have been doing lots (and I mean lots) of it - as has the EU. Unfortunately, rather than having the desired effect of stimulating the real economy it has mostly found its way into artificially inflating the stock market (and to some extent the London property market). Not a huge help to the average Jo - but nice for the City.
Labour will print more money also, but have pledged, via a new National Investment Bank, to target the new money into real regeneration, investment and growth - not to pump up the stock market to the benefit of the few.

The idea/myth that the Conservatives have a firm grasp on the economy is laughable TBH - how could they ? Their whole raison d'etre is to reduce govt. intervention in the economy/markets - leaving it all to the big boys in the City - the likes of whom seem to be disproportionately represented in the ranks of the Conservative Party BTW.

Better than being an idiot and voting for a water walker and his brainless lackies. Can you seriously think the likes of Corbyn and Diane Abbot would run the country better?????
See this has to stop - why do you attack Corbyn in such a disrespectful way - if you don't like him fine, you don't have to - but attack the policies - what of the policies do you dislike - what do you like about the Tory policies

And in answer to your question yes I do think they would run it better, better than running down the NHS to sell it off, increasing the deficit, increasing homelessness, making working people have to use foodbanks and saddling our children with thousands of pounds worth of debt just to get a degree!!

What about you???
Who has advocated that then?

Oh for Christs Sake Fedup that shows how they kept it under control after labour doubled it in the last few years of their leadership. When you're up to your eyes in hock those debts aren't just going to vanish. The interest alone is dragging us down! :arrrghhh

2008 crash was not down to Labour - it was down to Margaret Thatcher and the Conservatives deregualting the City and financial services. This is what happens when the economy is run for the benefit of the few and not the many, and when politicians are at the service of the few.

The Labour Party of today want to reverse this trend - and, I might add, given that private debt is approaching the levels that it was pre the 2008 crash, this is imperative to prevent the seemingly never ending cycle of boom bust.

right ok - so the debt doubled because of the global recession under Labour ( global recession meaning worldwide) and that was labour's fault and it has gone up by another third under the Tories but that is also Labour's Fault is that your point??

dear sweet jesus

What say you on the NHS - happy to have a US style health service here then are you?

Futhermore, the increase in debt under the Tories incumbency, has come despite the austerity cuts, which has left many people on the brink, and many more sadly over it.....

The recession alone didn't double it, Labours policies did most of the damage. The Tories inherited a mess from labour or do you think every time a government changes the slate is wiped clean and all debts are cancelled??? It went up by a third as the Tories took over not because the Tories took over. If you look at your precious chart the deficit only slightly increased after the Tories tried to sort out the mess.

No I don't want a US style NHS, never said I did and already stated I do not agree with all Tory policies? Do you want an NHS were all the funding goes in wages and not on facilities and equipment?

Vote for who you like Fedup, your choice after all. Just make sure you know what you're voting for you don't seem so sure!

All irrelevant really as Labour don't have a hope in hell and we could argue all day so I'll leave it at that! :wave

I'm voting for theresa.
She is willing to kill millions with one press of a button.
She is strong & unstable.
That is all we need in a government.

we need to stop this rubbish about Labour being worse with the economy - this man says it better than I ever could

For clarity he did this is response to a radio presenter on Radio 4 claiming that Labour was always worse with the economy than the conservatives

And thank you I am quite sure who I am voting for - if you still vote Tory knowing they will dismantle and sell of the NHS I hope you can live with that

and ahh the old Labour doesn't have a chance, just like Corbyn had no chance of being leader first time round (220/1 I believe at the bookies) and most certainly wouldn't win the leadership the second time round

Of course they have a chance, and in reality it's the last chance to elect a real labour socialist government, I hope and pray we do - for all our futures

The posters on here defending Corbyn and attacking anyone who dares to say they'll vote Tory are missing the rather obvious point, namely how has it got so bad that average working people in their droves are even contemplating changing their voting allegiances (often life-long) and either abstaining or even voting for May?
Whitter on all you like about the complexities of Banking, Trident, NHS etc but the cold hard reality is Corbyn isn't going to hack it come election day no matter how good any Momentum-ite might feel his policies may be.
His Nu-Socialist Vanity Party project has left millions of ordinary voters to their (Tory) fate, mainly because most daren't contemplate a UK with someone like the brain-dead Jezza at the helm.
She would appear to be the lesser of the two evils.

well I don't know what people you are talking to but I am talking to people who are changing from Tory to Labour - some I would never have guessed in a million years

Mind you I am talking to actual people rather than just listening to newspapers and the news channels

Have you been out and knocked on any doors lately - I have - hundreds as have many other Labour Members - and while the media are spouting their polls and chanting strong and stable and telling everyone Corbyn is unelectable - we are hearing different

I and I would love you to explain on what planet Theresa May could be considered a lesser evil than Corbyn?

There is the small fact that many labour MPs don't support their own leader, that's cause for concern.

We can all argue til the cows come home.

I for one have made my mind up, it's not me you have to convince, it's the electorate you have to convince and the polls are not looking good.

Like I said previously, it's 1983 all over again.

Increase corporation tax and less money to employ staff so more on benefits so tax us more to pay for increased benefits .
It's a balancing act .
Open door policy ...umm that will work well .
Corbin and Abbott at the helm with 250000 extra coppers or was it 250 or maybe a 1000 ?.. disaster prone .
Theresa May may not be the real answer but by far the best we have

Labour can make rash promises . They wont ever have to deliver them.
