A nuclear deterrence is no use if you're not prepared to use it, you may as well stick it on a desk as a massive paperweight for all the good it will do, given Corbyn reticence about using it in the first place.

So it is a defence otherwise it's just an expensive ornament.
No, it's a deterrence, designed to stop enemies using their arsenal against us. Its call MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) for a reason.

Its definitely not a weapon of defence as they are to be used to defend the nation when it's under attack, or about to be. If you want to use it as a defensive weapon then you must consider it acceptable to use it in a defensive first strike. If we ever did then MAD would kick in and the world would go up in atomic smoke.

Nuclear weapons have only 1 recognised military role, to scare potential enemies into never using theirs.

I'm glad Corbyn is reticent about using it, I sure hope Teresa May is despite her public protestations. All responsible leaders, and even the mad ones, realise nuclear conflict isn't winnable even with a first strike.

For a deterrence to work, you have to be prepared to use it in defence. Corbyn reticence doesn't inspire fear in our enemies and gives them confidence in attacking knowing we will delay retaliation. The tidents are useless sat in their lauch pads if we delay using them.

I know all about MAD I've lived through the Cold War as did many Labour MPs at the time, many of which have served in the military and knows the value of robust defence policy. Corbyn has never served, the rest of the Corbynistas didn't either.

Corbyn policies doesn't inspire confidence in me, so I'm voting Tory taking into consider the big picture.

Anyone voting Tory really needs to tell me why

You think she can get a deal on Brexit - the woman won't even meet Corbyn in a debate - how the hell is she going to deal with 27 other countries if she runs away from one man??

She wants to bring back fox hunting - she wants people to be able to watch a fox being ripped to shreds - for fun

Not to mention TM husband's company is being investigated 'It seems the Cabinet Office Propriety and Ethics Team has launched an inquiry into whether the company which employs Theresa May’s husband, Philip, could have potentially made large sums of money from Brexit market movements caused by her decisions.' the company made money betting whether the pound would rise or fall - whilst living with the woman whose announcements have that power!!

And TM 'lost' 114 files linked to the peodophile investigations, that meant no prosecutions were brought - is this really the sort of person you want in charge of the country??? I do not

Not to mention the biggest one - the NHS - she has already inferred that she will use the NHS to get a better trade deal with America - ie she will sell it to them, it's already started with the STP plans where every part of the country is being sectioned off into nice little neat packages ready to be sold to the highest bidder - do you really want an American healthcare system here because that it what we will get - where your insurance is checked before your pulse.

Not voting for Labour because you don't like Corbyn - well do you like him more than having to sell your house to pay for your healthcare??

Get a grip people - any working man that doesn't vote Labour - I just do not understand

Hi NW, me again,
if you'll indulge me once more please.
Which policies of Corbyns don't you like, and which ones of the Tories do you like?

Cheers

Better than being an idiot and voting for a water walker and his brainless lackies. Can you seriously think the likes of Corbyn and Diane Abbot would run the country better?????

Well said fedupostie.
I can't believe what I hear coming from regular working people about may & her team.
My only way to understand it is that there must be some kind of mind altering device owned by the tories & their billionaire paymasters that lots of hard working people are too weak or stupid to fight against.

See this has to stop - why do you attack Corbyn in such a disrespectful way - if you don't like him fine, you don't have to - but attack the policies - what of the policies do you dislike - what do you like about the Tory policies

And in answer to your question yes I do think they would run it better, better than running down the NHS to sell it off, increasing the deficit, increasing homelessness, making working people have to use foodbanks and saddling our children with thousands of pounds worth of debt just to get a degree!!

What about you???

In the 1970s we nearly went broke to the extent we had to borrow money from the imf just to pay our basic bills. The country was in a right mess and inflation was touching 25%.
The Tories have already borrowed £1.79 trillion, more than all Lab governments
The national debt is around £1.79 trillion. It wasn't just borrowed by the Tories . Labour were in office for quite a few years and besides a huge amount of that was used to stop the financial markets collapsing nine years ago. Borrowing money is fine if you can service the debt, but what if the economy goes in decline due to us leaving the common market. What then? Interest rates rises ,government spending is curtailed, jobs go homes are repossessed and hey ho we're back to square one

There is it's called the press , a whole world of information at their fingertips and people still believe what they read in the paper and see on the news.

The press and media are owned by the very people Corbyn is talking about making pay the taxes that are due - wonder why they would be against him :arrrghhh

If you need to use your "deterrent" it has already failed in its primary objective.
It hasn't deterred anyone.

How would you judge the "success" of your nuclear capability in the event of its use?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Defence is still the wrong word unless you use it in a first strike (IMHO), but you do recognise it would be used in retaliation which is the ethos of MAD. All Corbyn has done is say he wouldn't use it. Whereas in a First strike situation, Fallon, and by association Theresa May, says they will.

As an ex-serviceman, I honestly can't see why we would ever use them, excepting a MAD scenario. We have more precise weapons, totally under our control that can do the same missions with less collateral damage and less chance of being intercepted and destroyed en-route. We launch a nuclear missile instead of an aircraft carrying a FAB or a Cruise Missle, and it gets intercepted over a friendly country, then effectively we have used a dirty bomb on an ally. That's a scary scenario.

Well look at my last post on another thread for what I don't like about labours policies. As for the rest of your nonsense oh where do I start. The deficit was created by Tony Blair and Labour before the Tories got back into power (Little things like illegal wars cost a lot of money you know!) and the Tories have been trying to cut it back ever since. Ok NHS, guess who started selling off the NHS? Tony Blair that's right your beloved labour! Worried about saddling your children with University debts guess what? University fees were introduce by LABOUR!

Go do your homework then decide who you should be voting for you seem very misinformed! :arrrghhh

I may not like all the Tory policies but I feel much safer with them running the country. :cuppa

Scroll up a few posts and look at my attachment re the deficit btw the last 2 red bars are the GLOBAL RECESSION, what part of the blue bars after it shows the Tory's trying to cut it back ever since??? Do you cut it back by making it bigger? and as for your other points yes i fully acknowledge they were started by labour - but that was NU labour who were only ever red Tories - this is REAL labour - fighting for the working man, so only right they should be the ones to get rid of them.
