A postman refused to deliver mail to a family home because he was scared of their pet chihuahua Tiny.

Sarah Martin, 30, received no mail for nine days after the 7in tall dog barked at the local postie.

Royal Mail only reinstated deliveries after she installed a letterbox at the end of her garden path.

Mum-of-three Sarah said: "Tiny's always hated the postman.

"She was just warning him off but she has never bit him and has never bit anyone.

"I had no official explanation from the Royal Mail and they didn't offer for me to come and collect it, I just didn't get my post for nine days.

"It is ridiculous, she is called Tiny for a reason.

"I told the postman 'what are you scared for? She's like an overgrown rat'."

Sarah's mail was stopped earlier this month following an incident at her home in Daventry, Northants.

The care worker had installed a guard rail at the front door to stop four-year-old Tiny from terrorising the postman.

But her children Jacob, eight, and seven-year-old twins Willow and Summer, accidentally let the dog out during the Easter holidays.

Sarah claims the postie left her young kids in tears after shouting at them and even tried to kick Tiny.

She added: "It was a few weeks ago she got out the front and was barking at him and he was trying to kick her in the face.

"He was shouting at the kids 'Get your dog inside' and the kids were crying.

"He told me he had rang the supervisor and they had suspended my post."

Deliveries to Sarah's home restarted on Saturday after she bought a £20 letterbox.

Royal Mail has apologised for any inconvenience caused.

A spokesperson said: "We know that the overwhelming majority of dogs are friendly most of the time.

"However even the most placid animal will defend itself if it feels its territory is being threatened.

"Our first priority as an employer is to ensure the welfare and safety of our people who provide a valuable service to our customers."

The little ankle biters are generally the worst and most vicious of all dogs. The choice to deliver there would depend on if I had shorts or trousers on.

You get bit by a big or little dog,it's still the best part of a day in A&E getting it cleaned out,I've got better things to do with my time that sit in A&E because some dumb idiot cannot control their dog.

Typical uppity irresponsible dog owner who's pet can do no wrong. I bet if the Chihuahua bit the postmans finger and drew blood she would be defending her dog. Unbelievable.

I had to fend off a Jack Russell with my bundle of Mail not so long ago. The owner had left his French doors open, he had to pin it to the ground with his foot. Every time I deliver there his wife tells me "He's a friendly wee dog, really". They'll say anything to defend their dogs.
