But it doesn't affect you so why moan? You have a finish time that is yours not thiers, that's the point! :arrrghhh

You also cannot justifiably label them selfish if you have no idea why they are flying around. There may be various reasons why they need to get home early, picking up kids from school, caring for a parent or loved one, etc. But yet again this is not your concern nor your business is it!
Guess you must be happy having lapsing and extra delivery points added to your walk due to the runners carving walks up :cuppa
Makes no difference as I have a finishing time which stays the same so why should I care as it doesn't change??????????????
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

If RM push back last acceptance times by a couple of hours, you'll need to get used to working 9-5

The point is nobody should be 'flying around' to finish early. We all have family and personal commitments outside of work, but that is no justification for coming in early and trashing the job by cutting every corner going. The end result of that is more lapsing and more cost cutting which is to the detriment of EVERYONE of us.

What other employer would allow you to come in early and down tools whenever you feel like it? If your shift at a supermarket is 8am to 4pm you cannot decide to come in an hour earlier so you can leg it out the door at 3pm. That Royal Mail allows this to go on is a management failure. Yet we all know union reps and the like who don't even follow the guidance of their own union and are part and parcel of this job wrecking culture.

This paranoia about people finishing early will make RM cut staff, hours and make walks bigger needs to stop. RM us approved programs to dictate how big walks are. No matter how you build it up or stay in denial it IS still job and finish. So are people actually saying become some people are faster or better at the job they should be expected to do more work?

If managers see a walk finish an hour early every day, that's an extra hours work (lapsing and/or extra delivery points) that they can add to that walk, saving an hour from the budget that will be gone from the budget forever.

The best way that RM can deal with it is to add a couple of timed collections to every delivery, timed so that you have just enough time to do them and get back to the DO and book stuff back in, etc before your finish time.

Just wait until you start to get all your flats and letters sequenced (don't know if together or separate yet), you'll have a lot more time for the actual delivery, i wonder how many DO staff will still be happy to be "runners" once that happens. From what I've heard that's going to start to happen by the winter

In my office two of the 'fastest' posties also have the highest number of customer complaints on both their respective walks. They have also been counselled numerous times on their driving (excessive speeding, braking etc). They get back to the office an hour early every day almost without exception. By your definition because they are 'fast' they are 'better' at their job. Clearly if they are generating the highest number of customer complaints in the office then they are not doing the job to specification and cutting every corner going.

They think they are brilliant posties getting back to the office first but what they save the DOM in overtime is nothing compared to the cost of their customer complaints to the business.

Fortunately that isn't how it works, we have agreed tools, processes and procedures for determining walk sizes and absorption/lapsing.

How can you have a timed collection at the end of an unpredictable delivery? Anyway their isn't enough collection work left to start sticking it on the end of deliveries.

At the moment roughly 9-11 minutes of my prep time is allocated for manual flats and letters, on a bad day you might be looking at 200-300 items at an average prep rate of around 25 per min. If you sequence the whole lot I might have to up that rate to 35/min and lose 3 minutes of my indoor workload.

I might just go for an extra piss.

Consider the following scenario...
OPG starts at their contract time on a busy day eg. Wednesday, takes all their 40 minutes paid break, but finishes delivery ~30 minutes before their contract hours are up having locked up their HCT to deliver by pouch loops and grabbing mail for the next address from the letter bundle while walking. They sign out and go home ~30mins early without claiming overtime.

Who has "gained" here?

In my opinion, its RM, because I'd expect those two time saving methods to have made the delivery time at least 45 minutes quicker. The OPG has effectively given away at least 15 minutes overtime, plus they could potentially risk losing any sick pay depending upon the circumstances.

They are only really "making time" if they finish at least 45 minutes before their duty time, unless it is a quiet day, like a typical Tuesday (in which case I would guesstimate that the above corner cutting saves at least 20 minutes).

No logic what so ever!! Who has gained here? Both!! Employee finishes early plus RM have the job completed without paying out extra.

In that case, I don't know who approved them.

I have done every duty in my office, except for a couple of rurals and a couple of hybrids, which is somewhere around 50 different deliveries. I can deliver some of the HCT deliveries in less than 3 hours (and I don't tie it to a lamp post and deliver from a bag) while a number of the shared vans can take between 4and a half and 5 hours (again, I don't use a bag on the shoulder) even when working with speedy types.

Pegasus was responsible for the most screwed up revisions in the land. Unfortunately many offices seem to still be cursed with its legacy!

This thread seems to be going off at a tangent but as FT points out. As many of us "attempt" to point out. The size of the walks is not determined by the amount of runners an office has!

As for ending up with a 9-5 job SpaceP, that may not suit everybody but it would actually suit me down to the ground! :thumbup

If someone's getting back, consistently an hr early every day, however they are managing it, then royal mail aren't getting full value for money out of them. They could, and should, be made to do extra ips in the morning so that they are getting out an hr later and thus working their hrs. And if they complain about it, they wouldn't have a leg to stand on because they finish early every day. Think about it, say you wanted an extension building and the builder quotes you for four weeks labour, but rushes the job and goes home, job done after three weeks. Would you be happy? No. Because you're paying him a weeks wages while he's working on something else, having rushed your job.

Probably as long as the job was done to standard. It wouldn't really matter how he did the job, whether he followed procedure, followed H&S, took his break or started early, that's his responsibility. I would just be happy that the job got done to standard and as a bonus it was finished early.

The problem Royal Mail have is that they know allowing staff the chance to finish early is a major incentive driving efficiency on delivery. Even when I started that was clear, we didn't have job and finish in those days, after your delivery you came back to sort asap or did a second delivery, people dragged their feet, hid in cafes and often came back 5 minutes before finishing time from their first delivery....but on a Saturday it was an entirely different story, Saturday was once over the ground then home for most of us and our EP went through the roof, IPS was a blur and duties that took 3 hours Monday to Friday suddenly got done in 2.

The business isn't daft, they don't want 100,000 posties doing the job properly, it would drag efficiency back down to 80s level, they want their cake and they want to eat it so some form of job and finish will always remain, even if it's unofficial.

then get a job what revolves round your circumstances and not get paid for sat at home or picking kids up etc . it is when it affects me when they use these clowns who start early and are killing the job and dims saying well they can do it , anyway :wave

Absolutely spot on. No other employer would put up with employees legging it an hour early and sitting at home watching Jeremy Kyle while still being paid. Almost certainly they would be disciplined and potentially be dismissed.

Those consistently getting back early should be given more IPS or walk prepping to ensure they fill their paid hours.

To simply shrug your shoulders and say 'who cares it's nothing to do with me' is just selfish and ignores the reality that their actions are not only fraudulent and immoral but impact on the amount of lapsing and cost cutting imposed from above.

After all why should anyone be paid for hours they haven't worked?

The sooner Royal Mail brings in clock in machines the better. If you do the job properly and work all your paid hours then you have nothing to fear.
