Hey, I can't speak for others - I know some others don't mind them (for the extra payments) - but I f***ing loathe the things. As do the vast majority of people I've worked with.
There are not enough people employed within RM for us all to choose not to do them. This is why you are only allowed not to do them on genuine reasons of conscience and/or H&S.
Management, as I stated earlier, most likely do not give a shite so long as they get done. Why would they ? They aren't the f***ing idiots being asked to deliver someone elses crap are they ? And they do get delivered by someone.
But in the case of the OP you clearly have 2 people who don't care to do them. What do you do ? They have to be delivered within a specified timeframe. Postie No.1 has already passed the book and is now off work until after the expiry of said timeframe for completion.
Are we really suggesting that Postie No.2 can simply refuse to do them ?
Or are you suggesting that he fabricate a reason for not doing them - for eg. he believes democracy to be a sham and that by him delivering said materials he feels he would become complicit in the scam ??
This is getting ridiculous.
Postie 1 should have done his bit and not left it for someone else to do. If management have bigger fish to fry then I'd suggest consulting a rep - because postie 1 is clearly not playing the game here.
Tell you what I'd do - do a proportion of the election material. Do that proportion that would have fallen to you had Postie 1 done his share. That way you are doing your bit.
Let the management find out why whats left hasn't been delivered. Put it back onto them.

OP - any Health and Safety concerns put forward by the shirker do you know ?
Only that he had flu, but he had it all week and had been doing them yet he said he decided on Friday that he wasn't doing any. The conversation I had with him that day is as he still had the last of his polling cards he wasn't doing any of this particular election material THAT DAY, so I would put the majority of mine in, go on my days off where he and the floater would do what they could then I'd come back and finish them today. Obviously at some point over my days off that changed as they were all still there.

Myself and the floater did do one days share today, but I ended up finding someone to take the rest on overtime tomorrow after being given a days extension. With two more lots coming in today and out walk being overly heavy to start with theres no way we could take 4 days worth of them in 2 days (or one day if we hadn't been given that extension)jetblack wrote: Tell you what I'd do - do a proportion of the election material. We (West of Scotland) are paid 6p an item (Polling Cards and leaflets). Are there really such differences around the country? Are regional managers making payment amounts up arbitrarily?Wednesday wrote:How do you know what election material you get paid for?We had polling cards that were second class and we were told 3p each, but I thought if it was second class we would not get a payment.

My thoughts as well !bmccoll wrote:We (West of Scotland) are paid 6p an item (Polling Cards and leaflets). Are there really such differences around the country? A polling card is polling card throughout the country.
A party propaganda leaflet is the same. There should be NO discrepancy in payments for delivery.
Maybe someone with knowledge of our union hierarchy can explain this grossly unfair practice.

It has been explained before but basically its a hangover from a CWU agreement and the different methods that were used before a national agreement replaced them.tommyrep wrote:My thoughts as well !bmccoll wrote:We (West of Scotland) are paid 6p an item (Polling Cards and leaflets). 4) Payments
All existing local payments covering the delivery of election material as stated in
paragraph 2 above will remain in place, and in accordance with this agreement, with the
following exceptions.
1. The minimum payment for delivering election material will be 3p per item.
2. The maximum payment for delivering election material will be 6.6p per item.
3. All hours based schemes will be converted to pence per item schemes and then the
criteria in 1 and 2 above will be applied. Where delivery offices have introduced a SDD
revision since the last delivery of election material then the following formula will be
applied prior to the criteria in 1 and 2 above being applied.
Previous no. Walks X O/T hours per walk e.g. 35 X 2 hrs hours = 3.5hrs
Current no. of Walks 20
4. In those Units where there are two payments e.g. 4.5p for the first three parties and
1.67p for additional parties the minimum payment will become 3p with any payments over
this amount being retained.
5. In those Units where there is a mixture of hours and pence per item based payments
the process in 4) 3. above will be followed for the hours based element, with the process
in 4) 4. above then being applied.
Where election material items exceed 20g in weight a further 0.5p will be payable.
These revised payments apply from the date of this agreement and cover all election
material as identified above. They are payable on an individual basis, and are not affected
by any collective criteria/responsibility.

Election Material
Other than in circumstances where the conscience clause applies we cannot refuse to deliver any particular mail stream including election material however... as Clash points out resourcing to workload would mean that there would be no time in the existing work plan to prepare the material. What this means in practice is that anyone delivering election material will need to incur overtime, since overtime is not compulsory and some people have commitments outside work they obviously have the right to say no.
What you are actually refusing is the overtime and since it would be ridiculous for a manager to spend budgeted hours prepping the election material and probably then still have to pay the OPG for delivering them the best solution for everyone is to find someone who wants to do them.
I have to add the guy who just left them is an idiot, you can't just walk away from mail of any kind whether it's election material, D2D or first class without informing management.
