The business would never consider performance related pay on the grounds that it could be discriminatory to lazy sods.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

So if you work until 3pm and agree to do half a delivery for 2.30 and finish at 4pm they will only pay the 1 hour instead of the agreed 2.30? It would only happen to one person and then the offices that are run on overtime would be a right mess when all the overtime workers say stuff it ill drag my own delivery out and get an hour on that instead.dingo wrote:As a privatised company Royal Mail have a Team called the Audit and Risk committee ( ARC ) who go into offices to audit them on various issues. Part of this is that all paid for hours are worked including on belateds. Every DOM and DSM have access to the PDA actuals on their lap tops and know when someone is working beyond their time or overtime or have finished before their overtime.
I know of belateds of much more than 3 hours and Royal Mail under the guise of working all paid hours and having a minuimn legal 11 hour break between duties are stopping the amount being paid.
At the end of the day market forces are meaning some people are not willing to work on a belated or rest days for the hours being offered. The end result is more Agency staff who end up costing far more as they don't do tracked or PS and offer more quality of service or managers perform the deliveries and Royal Mail seem to ingnore the Working Time Directive for managers.
For years Delivery postal staff have been used to working a set amount of hours for a belated and rest days hourage. Royal Mail are now saying that we will no longer pay that hourage unless you are in line with the Working Time Directive or within your paid hours.
We are seeing more and Agency staff being used as some OPGs are no longer willing to work overtime for the hours being offered.

Well for a start the new postie is for the first (at present!) 12 months, but obviously that is lawful under induction/training rates. Now this training rate if RM's proposal takes off whereby the new starter won't get equal pay for 3 years in my opinion WOULD break this law as there can be no justification for the need to be trained for 3 years in a job most learn in a few months, if that.clashcityrocker wrote:And while I am at it......
Is it acceptable from a trade union perspective for some people to be on time and a quarter. some on time and a half, some on double time?
Because that is the only certain outcome of this rush to embrace laissez faire economics?
Perhaps the DOM should put up a list in the office of how much each person is worth? Would that be acceptable?
And isn't it actually illegal for people to be paid different rates for the same job?
Then you have the ludicrous minimal contract hours imposed for thousands of workers that don't reflect their usual working practices, being as they average say 10 hours more per week and thus lose out on holiday pay which means they earn 2% less than the man working those hours but stipulated in their contract. That is exacerbated on the Wally Week system where OPG's can actually earn up to 12% less a year than FT colleagues if they work FT but on a 20-25 hours contract. So effectively the situation which means people get paid less for the same job is already endemic within RM, partly because DIMs don't operate under the WFA as regards making contracts up and partly because (with the exception of offices like Corby) the Union never seems to press this when PT-ers complain.
So despite the best intent of existing legislation, you already have loopholes exploited to ensure there is a two-tier workforce as far as equal pay goes, and all conveniently brushed under the carpet with the "Oh well, the hourly rate of pay IS equal" broom.

its simple don't do it if its not enough for you and at the end of the day your only dragging them out the s**t , and o/t is over your time and shouldn't be paid within your contracted working hours , its not rocket science.

Duties are allocated fixed hours against them to complete. So if the duty is 7H30M, deduct 90 min for prep. You are left with 6H for the delivery component inc breaks/travel.
Anybody doing a half walk for less than 3H needs their head examining, especially when you factor in the added physical toll on your body. Not to mention you're being fleeced because the hours are there to pay it.

So if all the people who do overtime currently rush round so they can get it done before tea time decide whats the point and slow down on their own duties meaning theres no one to do the uncovered deliveries whats the solution apart from managers doing it? Royal mail wont employ more staff. Itll be pda data saying people are too slow or wasting time sat in vansworktotime wrote:its simple don't do it if its not enough for you and at the end of the day your only dragging them out the s**t , and o/t is over your time and shouldn't be paid within your contracted working hours , its not rocket science.

EXACTLY! Well said. Too many want their cake and eat it. Time for some to get real. Or is they don't want to pay it, they can always do it themselvesIloveMYredTROLLEY! wrote:Given how management keep chasing savings that are often not really there if you do the job correctly, they should be made to put money where their mouth is and make overtime at least 1.5x standard rate i.e. ~£17 per hour.
