Posties to climb highest hills in region to support 14-year-old
Big-hearted posties are hoping to deliver a wad of cash to a youngster who has “defied the odds” since the day she was born.
Royal Mail staff in Lockerbie are preparing to climb three of the highest hills in the region to support 14-year-old Kelsey Palmer.
Stacey Wright’s waters broke when she was 19 weeks pregnant and she was forced to spend nine weeks in the Queen Mother Hospital in Glasgow before Kelsey arrived weighing not much more than a bag of sugar.
Kelsey suffered a brain haemorrhage during the labour, resulting in her being diagnosed with cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus. She is also profoundly deaf and paraplegic.
Despite numerous ops and needing 24-hour care, the much-loved teen has defied the odds and stunned medical staff.
But she’s outgrown a specialist chair that helps with her posture, comfort and safety in her home
where she lives with mum, dad Stuart, brother and sisters.
And the local posties want to put that right.
Laura Sproat and Andy Brown were so touched by Kelsey’s plight they persuaded work pals to join a fundraiser for a new chair for her. On May 14, around a dozen of them will pull on their hiking boots and climb Queensberry, Criffel and the Merrick.
Laura, a friend of Stacey for more than 20 years, said: “There’s other equipment Kelsey could really benefit from but, because her dad works, the family don’t receive as much funding for any equipment she needs.
“I’ve witnessed this hard-working family go to hell and back constantly fighting the authorities and charities for their little girl.
“I am so proud of all the posties taking part; not one refused to help – and that means the world to me.”
