Support from AMICUS!!

Post by POSTMAN »

TO: ALL BRANCHES WITH POSTAL MEMBERS

Dear Colleague
Voting 'Yes' will make a difference

A 'Yes' vote in this ballot is the only hope of Royal Mail returning to a sensible approach on how we shape the future. Royal Mail say they listen to CWU members. A 'yes' vote is the most powerful way of putting this to the test - it leaves Royal Mail with nowhere to hide. No responsible employer will be able to ignore that 'yes' vote and no responsible employer will be able to turn down fresh talks.

What happens when we deliver the 'yes' vote?

When we deliver a 'yes' vote there will be no knee-jerk reaction and no call, at any stage, for an all-out strike. The Union will give Royal Mail the opportunity to reflect on their position and reach an agreement. If industrial action becomes necessary this will only be as a very last resort. We will consult with CWU members on the most effective type of action. Any action will ensure minimum cost to CWU members and maximum pressure on Royal Mail.

Support from Amicus

We are pleased that Amicus, the Union that represents Royal Mail managers, have agreed to distribute a letter from CWU to their members about the dispute. A copy of the letter is attached to this LTB. We have also received numerous reports that many of Royal Mail's local managers are openly telling staff of their frustration at being instructed to deliver Royal Mail's propaganda.

Yours sincerely
Dave Ward
Deputy General Secretary (P)

TO: ALL ROYAL MAIL MANAGERS

Dear Sir/Madam

I want to explain the CWU position.

Last year after Royal Mail's imposed pay deal backfired, we reached an agreement to modernise the company and raise the value and status of postal workers' jobs. This included a commitment to a new improved package focusing on higher basic pay by April 07.

Royal Mail abandoned our agreement.

Suddenly, the Business Leaders claim postal workers are 25% overpaid and 40% under worked. This is a fundamental mistake and demonstrates the leaders of the company have lost touch. All they have achieved is a mindset of failure across the whole organisation.

The Business Plan starts on the premise that over the next 5 years there will be continuous cuts in jobs, cuts in earnings and cuts in the service. This means none of us will succeed.

The CWU will not face away from change - but we will never accept a cost cutting frenzy replacing proper negotiations.

The Business Plan is an acceptance of failure - there is no vision - just a defeatist attitude towards competition. The right way to tackle competition is for Royal Mail to join CWU and directly challenge the ground rules set by Postcomm.

The Latest

The CWU has tabled a fresh offer so Royal Mail have the opportunity to move away from a dispute. The centrepiece of our proposal is how we tackle the key issue facing all of us - the Royal Mail Business plan. We have never asked for a 27% pay rise. Neither will we accept a pay cut in real terms.

Talk to CWU Representatives and you will see that what we have proposed offers a pragmatic and common sense solution.

It's difficult to negotiate an agreement with Royal Mail's senior managers. They are obsessed with asking you to convey concessions direct to the workforce. Their approach lacks integrity and is deliberately misleading. You know that even if Royal Mail removes all strings from the current offer - CWU members will still face unrelenting panic driven cost cutting measures.

All of us who really care about the future of our industry have a responsibility to challenge the Business Leaders' approach.

Strike action can not be taken unless it is mentioned on the ballot paper. It has to be clear to those voting that one option could be strike otherwise a strike is not legal.

Thats my understanding.

I'm confused about this. the ballot paper asks to support a "strike" not "action short of a strike". So if the return is a yes surely the only action available legally is a strike? I can't see how the membership can be consulted on "the most effective type of action" as the ballot is only to strike.

Confused.

Mark
Have you seen the ballot papers?
