Any idiot can work as a Royal Mail manager. As long as you are prepared to be flexible and manage in different offices, you must also be prepared to cut costs by any means necessary. This usually means increasing lapsing and also covering duties when staff have rung in sick, though hopefully not both at the same time!! Can you imagine what Royal Mail could get away with if they knew that they didn't have to pay sick pay for the 1st 3 days....well, now you know!

I believe the DOM assistance roll is the normal way to go. You normally end up getting messed about and don't normally get the correct pay for it. Bit like being a Postie.

Then they promote you to a sort of Trainee Manager, where you'll be doing the Manager's job BUT still not getting the correct pay (especially for Holidays when you get Posties rate). And you'll normally be flying around the area to any offices that need a hand.

I'd like to know the difference between the Managers who throw of walks and have to go out and do the left behind lapsing.... and the Mangers who just sit on their arse and say, "Manager's aren't allowed to go out on delivery" Is the former trying to impress or has the latter got his DOM status, and doesn't need the extra cash? :hmmmm

Yes guys, we get it. You don't like managers. Now if you can't contribute by answering the OP in a proper manner, shut up. Some of us want to earn more money if we can.

OP - look on the SuccessFactors site. Apply for a Deputy Manager job, and when you have some experience acting, apply for a DLM job.

I would write a letter to your DSM introducing yourself too, as it's him who'll be interviewing you.

Been doing it for about a year now, feel free to ask any questions.

Deputy manager courses are advertised on successfactors. These roles allow you to gain experience... as you cover managers in absence and holiday. During these weeks your are substituted bonus each week and anything over your contract is paid at overtime rate.
In effect it is a cheap way for royal mail to get a manager, instead of needing another manager to cover holidays as they are over stretched.
Subsequently it allows you the opportunity to gain valuable experience. As long as you are committed to staying positive and willing to learn royal mail will actively encourage you to promote through the ranks. The more you commit to learning yourself the more successful you could become.
There are people out there that can become brilliant good leaders and royal mail want to promote them.
Not all managers are scum. However it is stressful due to the above reactions. That are not necessary.

Good managers don't last. It's not what the business wants. They want cut backs at all times. Our area has just got rid of all it's acting managers, some have been doing it years. Now they've taken on a load of noobs from outside the business cuz they want to "change the culture". Lolz

Yes you'll earn more but you'll also stress more, in my opinion it's not worth the extra cash

Started seeing a lot more managers going sick with stress related stuff. Not a good place for a management career really. Very little opportunity to actually make any meaningful decisions and a pretty toxic overbearing command and control chain.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

I have been asked numerous times to go into management, by different managers. My answer is alway's the same, until Royal Mail change their management style (mid and lower ranks) or the Board start really tackling it instead of ticking boxes the answer is No.

While I respect what the managers are there to do, and I sympathise with their lack of real training, I don't respect the choices some of them make, and at the risk of getting sacked I think the management structure has got more toxic after Leighton and Croziers departure.
