Indeed.
A lot of it unworkable.
A lot of it very expensive with dubious returns.
A lot of it beyond the capabilities of the present management structure to implement.
A lot of it would take a long time to implement across the business.
A lot of "blue sky thinking".
A lot of bullshit.
A lot of it I suspect just throw onto the negotiating table so that it can be withdrawn at a later date as a "concession".
We've been here before.

Royal Mail strategy for Delivery is the following and they want to run trials based on this strategy in the talks.

Currently at mid night there is 80% of the sequencing work in. Royal Mail wants to delay sequencing until there is 90%.

This work will than not be sorted into a frame but will form the 1st bundle of a multiple bundle delivery.

The second wave which will be 10% will be walk sorted not sequenced. Along with the Manual work will be sorted into a frame. This will form the second buddle of the multiple bundle delivery.

The third buddle will be Door to door calculated via the walk buddying centre or RDC.

The end result will be Reduced indoor time and delivery staff will merge from 3 bundles on delivery.

Clearly the first buddle by not being sorted to a sorting frame will drive later starts.

Later acceptance times for parcels will also drive later starts as well as later plane services and artics.

Royal Mail want the union within these negotiations to trial these concepts including changing Mail centres attendances and when second class is sorted to support the overall strategy

Some may say these are crazy ideas but these are what Royal Mail want.

We've been hearing the same horror stories for years though, usually around the time of impending strike action or deals on critical matters - in this case pensions.

If the CWU throw out there all potential scare scenarios, when they end up presenting the members with said 'deal' they can turn around and claim responsibility for preventing them. In other words, prepare for a royal shafting in the upcoming pension talks.

Has whoever come up with that strategy accounted for the fact that sometimes a wave one batch will have to be run twice where it's physically impossible to run in one hit?

How are you supposed to hold 3 bundles at once would be my question. Unless they are proposing tiny 10 house bundles.

I think the best RM can achieve is walk sorting flats/packets at the MC eliminating IPS at the DO.

All this talk of bench sorting is way too progressive and not suitable for the size deliveries we have.

Lou you do make me chuckle. What scare stories ? Like when the union predicted the second delivery going? or when absorption came in 2008 ? or that sequencing would be introduced in 2010 ? or later Saturdays , or more part timers ? All scare stories which came in ?

Yes the business believe or not know about batch plans and hence why they want to mover the whole operations window backwards.

In terms of it won't work with walks like ours ? Think about it ?

If you have a walk with 1000 items and less say 700 sequencing letters , 200 manual and 100 parcels.

out of the 700 items based on 90% this would mean 630 letters would be on the first wave and they would not be put into the frame. Lets say the average prep rate and I have gone low was 7 per minute ( all in ) than 90 minutes of prep would be up for grabs at you are no longer putting this into the frame. You won't need to come in at the same time as your role for this part of the workload will be redirections etc.

The remaining 10% of sequencing mail (70 items ) will come in walk sorted to reduce sequencing time and this along with the manual mail of 200 would be sorted into the frame. That 270 items at an average prep rate of 7 that would take 39 mins approximately.

Ultimately with the introduction of 16 CELLLs machine across the UK which walk sort and sequence manual and flats. Royal Mail"s aim will be to move the first wave to 90% and than remove the use of the frame as this will allow them to merge more delivery units and for them to sell buildings.

I am totally opposed to this strategy and will make fight to stop it.

However unlike some of you I don't bury my head in the sand and think we are all making this up and that Royal Mail are such a caring employer they really don't want to introduce a method change which cuts the indoor hourage of delivery offices.

But hey if you don't want to know in the future I will be happy to keep you all in the dark !

Between a couple of sorting products that Solystic make it's probably possible theoretically for MCs to be able to walk sort small parcels. Do DOs have a dbf with a bag for each walk or do you sort small parcels down to groups/batches of walks first then to walk level?

dingo, are the CSS machines going to be retrofitted to handle flats as well?

No flats and large letters will be done by the 16 CELLLs machines which will be deployed following the Sucessful deployment of the Exeter machine.

Where do you get 90 mins prep for wave 1 sequence ? it takes me 30mins to do both walks.

Forgive my ignorance - are these CELLS machines the XMS machines mentioned on other threads.?

All of a sudden 6 hour deliveries doesn't sound so bad, scanning most packets, filling form lefts, delivering from 3 bundles - a 3.5 hour walk now would take 6 hours under those methods.

Dingo, you haven't answered the question, how do you hold and merge three bundles of mail , presumably at the door along with packets and a PDA and pull a trolley of course and how do you write out a P739?

It just isn't practical, not only that it's a potential health and safety and quality nightmare.
You know that, we know that and royal mail know that so why are we still talking about it?
