No, never mind "taking to the nearest police station that is open (in my case 8 miles away)" they now accept notification by means of a telephone call, this being on the basis that if you are honest enough to report the find then you are decent enough to look after it for a given time in case it is claimed.dblad wrote:So, what are you supposed to do with this £20 note, if I put it in my pocket I'm a thief, If I don't put it n my pocket where am I going to put it to keep it safe until I finish my walk and do the jolly good thing of taking to the nearest police station that is open (in my case 8 miles away) Do I hold it my hand and risk putting it through a letter box with mail, do I ask someone for a pin to pin on my coat/shirt or do I work one handed making sure the note is in my hand and held high above my head so everybody knows I'm not a thief. feck it, I'm off to the pub.

£20 note!
Woman finds £20 on the floor and is convicted of theft

Next time you find some cash on the floor you might want to think twice before pocketing it.
It turns out there may not be such a thing as “finders keepers” when it comes to spotting some cash on the ground.
Nicole Bailey picked up a £20 note she spotted on the floor of a One Stop branch in Blurton, Stoke-on-Trent, and now she has a criminal record.
The money was dropped by a customer who withdrew it from a nearby cash point, Staffordshire Police said.
Bailey pleaded guilty to theft in front of magistrates at the North Staffordshire Justice Centre after seeing CCTV evidence. She was handed a six month conditional discharge and must pay a total of £175 in costs, the Stoke Sentinel reported.
Chief Inspector Karen Stevenson, said: “Morally, the right thing to do is hand in any found property so that the person who has lost out has every opportunity to be reunited with it. This was someone’s hard-earned money and we are committed to supporting all victims in our community.
“We would actively encourage any member of the public who picks up money that has been dropped to be honest and do the right thing by taking all reasonable steps to try and find the owner.”

£20 note!
PROOF. Has she got it, If not then then no case to answer M'lud. She can say all she wants, the Police, the courts, need proof to charge anyone for anything.
If she accuses you of anything that's slander, get her to write it down then that's Libel which always stands a better chance of conviction because the proof is there in black and white, depending on what colour pen she uses. Don't worry

And do you have the same attitude if you find a £20 note falling out of a birthday card envelope ?

They don't need proof to charge you with anything, if they had to have proof before charge what's the point of the courts. They need reasonable suspicion to charge and if that's down to a statement made by the victim it's enough, you get taken to court and they then decide. Oh by the way there is no double jeopardy with regards convicting someone with slander if you got off with it. You could take out a private civil case but that would cost you and the fact that you had been taken to court meaning the police and cps believed the statement maker would mean you have virtually no chance of winning. But good luck.

£20 note!
As far as you were concerned you had a 20 pound note already in your pocket to go shopping with later and when you found it on the floor ( as you were taking your PDA or cards out of the same pocket) you just presumed it was yours that fell out of your pocket.
Finders keepers anyway. Nothing will happen dont worry. Im not sure many people on this earth would hand a £20 note into the police anyway, what do you think the police would do with it anyway apart from put it into their own funds. Most would just pocket it. If it was a wallet or phone then there would be cause for concern.
