Chaotic scenes after serious car crash with a Royal Mail lorry at level crossing

A car has crashed into a level crossing on the outskirts of Lincoln, leaving the driver seriously injured.

The incident happened at about 2.30pm on March 2 on the A158 at Langworth and involved a Cauxhall Corsa and a Royal Mail lorry.

A man has been flown to the Queen's s Medical Centre in Nottingham by the air ambulance and four other people have been admitted to Lincoln County Hospital.

The road has been closed and motorists are asked to find an alternative route.


The level crossing barriers are bent and buckled and the end of one has smashed a hole in the window of the former station master's house.


The incident happened earlier today, March 2, at 2.30pm.



East Midlands Ambulance Service posted this on Facebook: "We are dealing with a large scale incident on Station Road in Langworth Lincoln involving multiple casualties.

"We were first notified of the incident at 14:34 by a caller who reported a collision involving a car and a lorry.

"We immediately sent two crews to the emergency and responders and a Doctor from LIVES.

Due to the large number of casualties our paramedics requested additional support from more ambulance crews and the air ambulance.

"Four patients have been taken by ambulance to Lincoln County Hospital and one patient with serious injuries has been flown by the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance to QMC Major Trauma Centre.

"Emergency services are still on scene and people are advised to avoid the area."

Trains between Grimsby and Lincoln have also been cancelled.

Doubt the RM lorry was even involved, looks to have been waiting at the crossing, the corsa at a guess has tried to beat the barriers closing at speed, lost control, clipped the building nearby and spun into the lorry.

I'd go with that. The barriers are bent on the opposite side to the RM lorry so the Corsa must have come through them before hitting the stationary lorry. Like you say (ish), clipped the barrier, lost control and the car has dug itself under the back wheel of the lorry.

Three arrested in level crossing crash involving 'stolen' car

Three teenagers who were passengers in a suspected stolen car which crashed through a Lincolnshire level crossing have been arrested.

The Vauxhall Corsa was fleeing from police when it crashed through the barrier at Langworth level crossing at around 2.30pm yesterday, Thursday, March 2.

The can then crashed with a Royal mail van and damage was caused to a neighbouring house. #

Police say three passengers from the car are in custody.

They are an 18-year-old male and two females, aged 18 and 19, all from the South Yorkshire area.

A 15-year-old male is being treated at Lincoln County Hospital and a 16-year-old male was flown by the air ambulance to the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham where he remains.

Due to the car failing to stop for police, the matter has been reported to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

A police spokesman said: "Police were alerted to a Vauxhall Corsa in Lincolnshire which was believed to have been stolen in a neighbouring county.

"The Corsa had failed to stop for police when it was involved in the collision at the level crossing."

The crash did not involve a train.

The smashed barriers damaged a wall and a window at a house next to the crossing.

Emergency services rushed to the scene including ambulances, first responders, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.

A Langworth resident, a woman in her 50s said: "The barrier comes down several minutes before the train passes through. It was lucky a train hadn't also been involved."

The incident closed the A158 between Sudbrooke and Wragby, affecting traffic travelling between Lincoln and Horncastle. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Trains between Grimsby and Lincoln were cancelled and bus services were also affected.
