6 Hour Deliveries
Six hours is fine if you can go back to the office for a break in the middle but it will leave zero time for sorting or prep. We have some walks in our office half an hours drive away so there and back twice will waste 2hrs of traveling time. Can't see why this is efficient but then when is anything in RM efficient?
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

This is why the union are pushing for a 35 hour week rather than pushing for a pay rise , they know indoor work is gonna drop in future

You can have all the machines in the world to bring down indoor work, and say that you want 6hr deliveries, but ultimately, the job is done by actual human beings. My duty is usually 3:40-4:20 on a normal day, and I walk about 12 miles while at work. There is no way a workforce of over 100,000 can be expected to walk 20 miles every day of the year, it's not physically possible.

You can kiss sweet goodbye to a 6 day weeknickbsmooth wrote:I'm on a 6day week with 1in6 weeks off,if 6hr deliveries come in,then there's no way I could physically manage 6x 6hr deliveries a week.

More collection work.deltaforce wrote:If the indoor element is being eroded, how do we fill those hours ? Increase in part time duties , longer outdoor element or cut in the working week. Most likely a bit of all three but I doubt things will stay as they are.
I think the six hour delivery could be a bit of a red herring as the six hours will include more collection work rather than just slogging around a delivery for six hours.

Another possibility is the spreading of DO full time hours over more days, full time hours split over 7 days would give about 5 1/2 hours delivery time per day. I wouldn't be surprised to see RM look at more collections and deliveries on Sundays

But there aren't many post boxes on most rounds so collections wouldn't add much towards the six hours.Deadly wrote:More collection work.deltaforce wrote:If the indoor element is being eroded, how do we fill those hours ? I was thinking about complete collection routes that are presently done by dedicated collection drivers. i.e. a collection route consisting of post boxes, post offices and firms added onto the end of a delivery.Lounge Lizard wrote:But there aren't many post boxes on most rounds so collections wouldn't add much towards the six hours.Deadly wrote:More collection work.deltaforce wrote:If the indoor element is being eroded, how do we fill those hours ? [quote="SpacePhoenix"]It wouldn't surprise me to see it come in, the new machines that RM are looking to bring in are a real game changer both in MCs and DOs. In MCs manual letter and flat sorting will probably be virtually eliminated and depending on what parcel sorting technology RM goes for, MCs could in theory end up sorting small parcels down to walk level.
In DOs the net result of the new machines will be very little indoor work in DOs as the new machines that RM are looking to introduce can sequence flats and letters together
How many times have we heard that particular saying over the years, yet we are still sorting,or more usually failing,to clear every morning.
As for those who say 6 hour delivery span will never happen, you bet they will, and this is how: Royal Mail fly the flag , to see what kind of reaction it gets, the union oppose the idea and rightly, so it gets relaunched, except this time , there is a £250 ,or whatever figure you wish to pluck out of the ether, as an "incentive to change" and lo and behold, money talks and the turkeys vote for Christmas yet again and will immediately be on this board, lamenting about the physical strain and pressure they are under and being bullied to complete etc etc.

if we get a 35 hr week they wouldn't be able to get a 6 hr delivery in. not on the format they've got now anyway. over 5 days it would be 7hrs a day. by the time you factor in 40 mins break, and conveyance time to and from the delivery, that only leaves you the 6 hours. what about prep, getting pda's , reggies, doing redirections, kill offs, go for a shite, pouching off at the end....etc. they would have to have a total gamechanger to achieve their goals. on top of it all there's the battle with the union over h&s of it all and the undoubted NO vote from staff. in my honest opinion it will never happen.chickenwittle wrote:This is why the union are pushing for a 35 hour week rather than pushing for a pay rise , they know indoor work is gonna drop in future

The paid break will go, so the 35 hours will be 7 paid hours per day, with the addition of an unpaid break. Realistically, that will be RM's next big money-saver, doing away with paid breaks, enabling more room for lapsing/bigger duties. By the time 6 hour deliveries become an official part of the business, most offices will have hit 5 hour deliveries anyway (if they're not there already).daveyeff wrote:if we get a 35 hr week they wouldn't be able to get a 6 hr delivery in. not on the format they've got now anyway. over 5 days it would be 7hrs a day. by the time you factor in 40 mins break, and conveyance time to and from the delivery, that only leaves you the 6 hours. what about prep, getting pda's , reggies, doing redirections, kill offs, go for a shite, pouching off at the end....etc. they would have to have a total gamechanger to achieve their goals. on top of it all there's the battle with the union over h&s of it all and the undoubted NO vote from staff. in my honest opinion it will never happen.chickenwittle wrote:This is why the union are pushing for a 35 hour week rather than pushing for a pay rise , they know indoor work is gonna drop in future
