Some of they guys not in the union ,just sit back and wait for any benefits that might come after a strike etc. Better pay deals, t and cs , 5 day week and so on , does annoy a bit. We ALL need to stick together or were doomed.

The CWU are not interested in a DC scheme. The policy of the CWU is that we want a united scheme without everyone in a new DB scheme with a minuimn Royal Mail contribution of 17.1%. Watch this space over the next few days ! Some of you argued that the union never has a plan b well well hopefully your be pleasantly surprised.
Thanks for clarifying that Dingo, much of this is above my paygrade! I support the CWU and if the majority of members vote for industrial action I'll take it. I do despair at the short shortsightedness of many of my colleagues, I'm sure many will be swayed by the offer of a £750 bung..... (as it will pay for a holiday), despite the long term effects on their pension. :d'oh!
As has been pointed out above, it is a divided workforce. I can't say I'd blame any of the post-2008 starters for not wanting any part in industrial action, as we did fook all to keep it going back then. If I was them I wouldn't go out of my way helping long-term workers, who tend to look down their noses at these newcomers anyway, secure their pensions either. That's all the while ignoring the non-union guys, which is a significant percentage. I can't see there being the support for action, not that I'd expect the CWU lapdogs to even reach that point.

I think the union is aware that there is no point in calling for industrial action to protect the pensions of some of the membership and ignore the plight of others.

As has been hinted at the union's position will be to fight for a united pension scheme for all that not only defends the terms of the DB scheme members but also improves the pension for the DC members.

What we will be asked to fight for is a decent pension for all.

What shape that will take we don't know and dingo's wish list seems very optimistic but one thing is for sure if we don't put up a fight and that means all of us then both the DB and the DC members will end up poorer for it.

These are worrying times. Royal Mail will simply spout out that they need to change the pension scheme in order for the business to survive. Just like we need more automation and fewer sorting staff, fewer delivery staff and bigger duties etc etc etc.

I don't know much about pensions; but I would hate the thought of continuing to work for the company until I am 70 simply because I couldn't afford to live when I come to retire. What does 'defined contribution' actually mean? Does it mean that we are letting employers get away with lots of pretentious waffle when they say that our pension schemes will be unaffordable by 2018??
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

So how was Royal Mail able to close the DB plan and change to the DC for any new starters as of 2008?

Didn't the existing members suspect they'd be next?

Why no fight?

Actually if I remember correctly it was the Union as they declared a victory as they had decoupled the pension issue, and this was after 8 strikes. So no it was not "no one gives a f**k"

So was the resolution that only employees who join after 2008 get affected?

TrueBlueTerrier wrote:I am amazed so many don't think this is worth a fight. Well here is my tuppence.

Pensions are deferred wages if they reduce what they pay in you are getting a double pay cut. 1 when working, 2 when the pension matures you'll be paid less.

The government are musing on plans to reduce the state pension and make you retire later. So the more your RM pension is reduced the less disposable income you'll have, and the nearer the breadline you will be. Eat or Heat won't be a tagline for some of you, it will be a reality.

This is a stark issue and is nothing to do with the generosity of the employer. If RM demanded a 10% pay reduction and increased the walking speed for delivery you'd all be up in arms. Well, this is more than 10% pay cut when you take into account lost contributions, and the amount you'll get each week on retirement, and you'll be working harder just to make up the shortfall.

Very true TBT

After 33 years of paying in to the pension I will be taking to the streets.
Always be one step ahead, play their game but be wiser. Revenge is sweet.
