Paid meal reliefs will remain
The drive to 35 will be over 3 to 4 years
Part timers will not reduce their hours but will get a pay rise as the hourly rate will increase.
The reason why we need a reduction in the working week is automation , improvements in machines read capacity and throughput, the introduction of the TOPs 2000 buddying system which means flats can by pass IPS , parcel machines , the new CELLs machine which is in Exeter which removes virtually all the IPS and there are another 11 ordered.
The reality is that automation will remove indoor work and if we do reduce the working week the out door span will have to increase massively especially as Royal Mail want to use all the technology to ensure that everyone works the hours they are contracted too even if that means you have to roll hours to an heavier day.
The Shorter Working Week is crucial to safeguarding jobs and preventing longer and longer spans
Never mind safeguarding jobs, a longer outdoor delivery span is more likely to force more postie's out of a f**cking job. You can dress up the outdoor hours any way you wish, but all I can see automation doing is forcing us all to start later, just like we are all sat there waiting for our second wave of mech and often it doesn't arrive or turns up late, it has many, many problems. If the company wants to automate everything then we might as well wave goodbye to the USO.
I'm also very reluctant to change my working hours yet again. The union quickly agreed to longs and shorts because it offers royal mail big savings in flexibility.
And as a side note wont the company make huge savings with their plans for a change in the pensions anyway??
We all know that the job is going tits up fast, but everything that I have heard about a 35 hour working week is negative and for me I would much rather have a 39 hour week with more indoor time. There are other areas where the business can save money, it shouldn't always be about bigger and bigger rounds for worn out postie's...
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
