It's a shame more offices can't do this, but in Royal Mail it's very much at attitude of everybody for themselves, which plays into their hands perfectly.

my office did this around 7 months ago, but we did it for a week. we even got the runners and early starters to stop what they were doing!

result was 4 PT being made upto FT.

looks like we will have to do the same in January as we are supposed to be a 29 FT / 6 PT office according to our TM1 but the DSM disagrees with it ( was only done last November so can't be wrong )

however we are running at 24 / 11 and been told that it will not change.

but it will have to because when we did our hours only walks all over the office failed or were partly covered, Managers from all over the sector brought in to sweep up the mess.

Excellent, our boss keeps saying he's cashed in his shares cos he knows what's going to happen , but he won't let on. Accrington had a walk out today we hear, if the brown noses get on our side , we should all cut off DAILY until they sack the linos and hire workers who deliver the post!

Unfortunately, it would need to be at this time of year to have any real impact, so too late for this year. Good idea though.
But maybe if they did it March when it is a Council Tax free month, then the people who rely on the extra hours will be less affected. Get it sorted CWU. Might give us a bit more ammunition in our wage negotiations as they seem to have been going on for about a year without any positive feedback getting to the frontline staff.

The point has already been made, you cannot expect Part Timers (who may only be on a 24 hour contact, and relying on the overtime to make ends meet) to work "Properly" for even a week. A daily "Work Properly" Day would probably be about as much as you could expect. :hmmmm

Even today, when most Posties were going over, we had idiots throwing off households (when they'd finished) in their own time. I'm not a Rep but I do talk to these guys and try to explain that they're working for nothing. The main gripe is that we used to stop delivering Households on the run up to Christmas. They'd been told by the DOM that the CWU had made an agreement 3 years ago to continue delivering them ( I can't remember that, but obviously made by some CWU Big Wig whose NEVER Had to try an fit 6 households on a double slot frame along with Christmas Mail....WHO ARE THESE DICKHEADS?) :d'oh!

I tried to explain that if you're pissed off with the situation make Royal Mail pay for it , literally, by throwing of Households in the morning BEFORE you throw your mail off. "But I haven't got the time to do that" was the reply! FFS. The point I'm trying to make is we're not working with the sharpest knives in the drawer and not matter what you try to do a lot of these idiots aren't going to carry on working for nothing, and trying to finish early! :cuppa

i know these people all too well, theres no getting through to them, most have worked through the culture of job and finish and they always seem to live in some weird fantasy that tomorrow will be quieter so they might finish early and at the same tike give evidence to the managers that their duties can be completed in this amount of time. The irony is that they stay behind after hours and prep the households in for the next day again :arrrghhh

I,m not saying do it at Christmas as thats not fair on the customers but in the New Year as in our office wed/thur/fri are still bonkers.
Two weeks of working contracted hours should highlight the problem and hopefully with proper information coming out of HQ to the media why we are doing it should help matters!

I have ALWAYS said that simply working your contracted hours and doing the job properly would have far more reaching effects on putting your point over than striking which is why I am personally against striking. The original poster's post above proves this point beyond doubt, over just ONE single day! The way the company is run now means that it is absolutely essential that on a daily basis we are expected to get a quart into a pint pot to get the job done.
Six days a week, we all in our own way - whether aware of it or not - go over and above what is required to get the job done. That's because the mind set of this job is "to get it done and go home". And there is nothing wrong with that as the end result is that both employer and customer are happy.
Striking merely puts the public - our customers - against us, gives us very bad publicity and leads to huge losses of business to our now many competitors which in large we never get back and then there's more pressure put on cutbacks to compensate for the losses. Years ago we did not have the competition so there was a point to be made by striking but in today's world things have changed drastically and we have to change course accordingly.
Working to your contract hours and doing things properly.........you still get your wages...........large numbers of customers still get their post........they see posties still walking the streets......and in large the problems are kept INTERNAL so little or no bad press. Think about it!

Here's one: Tell you what, never mind having up to 6 D2Ds to contend with, let's make it 7. One for each day of Moya's week, lovely jubbly! Thanks Uncle Bob. :evil/mad

trevjim wrote:So my office of around 25 walks, 45 or so staff, had got very fed up with the bullying and abuse going on, unpaid overtime, being 'forced' into working over our hours, getting told to start earlier/later than usual. So we, with the Help of our rep who is great, decided we would all work just to our contracted hours on the friday, as a stand against the abuse, and to prove to the bosses that part time contracts are not enough and generally that the who infrastructure is a mess.

the end result was as you would imagine, around 60% of the office had to cut off, the managers (and their manager friends they pulled in from nearby offices were out delivering until dark, some mail was left over for today aswell, it was actually very satisfying and a big FU to the shambles that is Royal mail at the moment.

we are not prepared to do it everyday, as alot of the part timers need the overtime to get by, but we pulled together and made a stand, and have threatened to do it again if the bosses continue to mess us about, so we shall we what the future brings
Superb showing on unity and enough is enough. You will obviously realise for this to have an effect it will incur financial difficulty for staff members as it will have to be continuous and not sporadic giving as little notice for management to reorganise and put alternative arrangements in place but you have made a start and hope you can all head for the finishing line. Lets all have a national SHITE DAY ( STOP HARASSMENT IN THE EMPLOYMENT).
