The Royal Mail is marking the 50th anniversary of its special stamps for Christmas by revealing that over 17 billion have been printed since the first ones in 1966.

There have been more than 200 different designs over the years, featuring secular and religious images.

The first Christmas stamps featured designs by children after a competition announced by Postmaster General Tony Benn.

"over 17 billion have been printed since the first ones in 1966" which is about 5 for each person in Britain each year which is what we might expect over for 51 years.
