Dropped elastic bands are 'putting wildlife at risk' and people are demanding posties stop it

Wildlife in Abbeydale is at risk as postmen and women are dropping elastic bands in the area, a resident has claimed.

Posties have allegedly been dropping the bands around for several months around the Heron Estate in Abbeydale, leading to concerns that critters in the area could be in danger.

One resident who lives in the estate says she is constantly picking up the elastic bands which have been left behind but Royal Mail "continue to fob me off" when she raises concerns.

The resident said: "I have spent months and month emailing Royal Mail about the continual dropping of elastic bands around the estate. I pick up a minimum of two bands a night.

"We have hedgehogs, foxes and a nature area full of waterbirds on this estate that I would prefer to keep alive. Failing that, it's blatant littering and there's a fine for that."

The resident added she only knew of the issue in the Heron Estate, but assumed the issue happened across all areas on Abbeydale.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We regularly remind our postmen and women of the importance of avoiding litter and the benefits of re-using bands.

"If members of the public find rubber bands, we would always encourage them to either re-use the bands themselves or return them to Royal Mail."

you would think we are dropping them on purpose the way this comes across. you cant hear them hit the ground when we do drop them. and if I know that I have dropped any I pick them up. I would image most posties are the same. especially the way RM are scrimping on 'laccy bands' at the moment.

Her time would be better employed writing to maccy'ds and the pizza places that inhabit her wonderful little corner of the world and telling them to tell their customers to stop dropping crappy food as it's making the flea ridden hedgehogs fat and hyperactive,also she might drop a line to all the smokers and tell them to stop dropping nub ends as all the little creatures are starting to get very chesty.

It is Darwinian evolution in action, only the stupidest animals are harmed by laccy bands therefore raising the average IQ of the remaining population. I plan on strewing my walk with hundreds of said bands to help create SUPERHEDGEHOG!

after all theres more of it than lacy bands and far more harmful to the envoirement

Well this is a first. I was out delivering when all of a sudden. Mutant squirrels who probably ingested rubber bands starting using the dropped rubber bands from the ground as a catapult. They fired acorns at me and everything! Scary times.
