PO Strike Three .... and stronger than ever

Speaking from a busy protest at Dalston Kingsland Crown Office in east London, CWU assistant secretary Andy Furey reported that Strike Three was “the best supported action we’ve had to date.”

Andy said: “Once again, I’m bowled over by the loyalty, solidarity and fighting spirit of our magnificent striking members – a big thank you and big respect to each and every one of them.

“And it’s great to welcome Diane Abbott to our picket here this morning, showing that our fight to save jobs, pensions and the Crown Network is fully supported by the local MP as well as residents.”

General secretary Dave Ward was at the Walworth Road picket, outside a Crown Office that’s fighting for its life against an ongoing closure threat and the MP for the area, Neil Coyle, has been to every one of the many protests that have taken place.

“Many thanks to Neil for his great support and thanks also to the many hundreds of local people who’ve been signing the CWU post cards,” said Dave.

“Today’s action has been excellent. And as Andy reports, the support is becoming stronger and more determined.

“Across the nation as a whole, there must now be thousands and thousands of these cards – and all of them are on their way to the Government Minister Margot James.”

From the Oldham Crown picket in the North West, CWU area rep Neil Barry reported “solid support up here from our members and from the public,” with over 300 post cards signed by passers-by here at Oldham and at nearby Omskirk, where I was earlier.”

Northern Ireland branches have been working their butts off all week and there are around 4,000 post cards signed so far. The strike has been solid and we’ve had strong backing from other unions, from MPs, MLAs and councillors as well as from the community as a whole.”

The union’s Wales secretary Gary Watkins told of an equally enthusiastic response in Bridgend, where there was “fantastic backing from the community” for the strike and the campaign.

“This office is due to be closed and people here are not happy about it at all,” he continued. “On Thursday, we had over 600 post cards signed and so far this morning, it’s already over 150.”

And it was a similar story down in the West Country, where Chris Roche and Sue Trehearne took part in protests in Devon and Gloucestershire respectively.

“We’re all out in Exeter and the public are very sympathetic,” reported Chris, while Sue said that the people of Cirencester are “really on board with our campaign.

“It’s only a small town, but it’s been brilliant,” she added.

“All across the country, our members have walked out on strike once again, in a dispute that’s winning more and more backing every time,” he said.

“Our Post Office members have been fantastic and so have the Great British public, who are signing our campaign post cards in their thousands – from the edge of Kent, across the West Country, throughout Wales, all regions of England, up into Scotland and over in Northern Ireland.

“And my message to the Minister Margot James is, you’ll be receiving a bumper Christmas mailbag from the people of the UK – courtesy of the CWU.”
