Local postman set to switch on village Christmas lights

Local postman Myles Boothman will switch on the Christmas lights in Burn this year, following in the footsteps of famous TV and radio celebrities.
He has been delivering to the village on the A19 south of Selby since 1989. Myles has now clocked up 32 years as a postman and says he still loves his job.

The lights switch-on will be on Saturday November 26th. It is the tenth year of Christmas lights in the village. 2016 also marks the 500th anniversary of Royal Mail.

Myles follows celebrities including the late Jean Alexander who played Hilda Ogden on Coronation Street. Jean was a regular in the village as her neice lives there.

Yorkshire Rows, the four-woman Atlantic rowing team, have also switched on the lights in the past. One of the rowers is a resident.

The Christmas lights tradition began in 2006 when Lee Davison from Helicopter Heroes was invited to the first ever Burn Lights switch-on.

Myles attended Carlton Holy Family and now lives in Selby. He said: “It’s great to be outdoors and see the changing seasons – and I meet some really nice people”.

“We are delighted that postman Myles has been given the honour of switching on the Burn Christmas lights especially as we are celebrating 500 years of postal services this year.
Our hardworking postmen and women deliver the post six days a week come rain or shine and are such important parts of their local communities - no more so than at Christmas, our busiest time of the year.”


The festivities kick off with refreshments and a chance to visit the Christmas Tree Festival in Burn Methodist Chapel from 2pm.

The traditional Christmas Market opens in the chapel schoolroom at 3pm and there will be performances by members of the Selebian Singers.

At 4.45pm carols will be sung opposite The Wheatsheaf pub and the countdown to the switch-on will start, followed by a visit from Santa.

Chris Phillipson, Parish Council chairman, says:
“We’re one of the smallest villages in North Yorkshire and have been fortunate to attract some famous people to switch on our small number of Christmas lights.
We have a fantastic community spirit and our well-loved postman Myles has contributed to that.”

Hope he gets back off delivery in time to switch the lights on , or perhaps he could break off his delivery to do it
