Police released CCTV stills of the man who tricked a postman into handing over someone else's debit cards
A man who stole thousands of pounds by tricking a postman into handing over letters that were not his is being hunted by police.
Police have released CCTV images of the man who approached a postman in Tabor Gardens, Cheam, convinced him he lived nearby and to hand over letters containing two debit cards.
The two cards were used on the same day, July 25, at ATMs and in banks in Bracknell, Ascot and Milton Keynes. Some £12,400 in cash was fraudulently obtained by the man.
The victims, a couple who live near where the postman was stopped, spotted the unauthorised transactions towards the end of July. They had not ordered replacement cards.
Sutton police officers are investigating. They suspect the incident was not a one-off offence.
The man, who is described as white and possibly aged in his 50s, was captured on CCTV at various banks on 25 July.
Police sergeant Anna Smith said: "It is unlikely that this was a one-off offence and, since the suspect used the cards outside of London, it is possible that he lives outside of the capital and may be committing similar offences elsewhere in the UK."
