South Woodford Royal Mail delivery office could transfer to Chingford

The South Woodford Royal Mail delivery office could be moving to Chingford, the Recorder can reveal.

The company is considering transferring the Marlborough Road depot, which has served the area for almost 60 years, three miles down the road to Waltham Forest.


Staff were informed on Friday of the proposal which “is part of Royal Mail’s ongoing transformation of its business to increase the efficiency of its operations”.

One employee, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Recorder: “None of the other staff that I have spoken to want this. This delivery office has been in the centre of South Woodford since 1948.”

The building was built after the Second World War, designed to withstand blasts from possible Cold War bomb threats.

The worker continued: “I’m worried for people who don’t have cars, elderly people, Chingford is not that close.

“At the moment it’s right in the centre of South Woodford.”

A Royal Mail spokeswoman explained the company had entered into discussions with the Communication Workers Union about the proposal, scheduled for Autumn 2017.

She said: “Royal Mail needs to find a new site for its South Woodford delivery operations as the current delivery office has insufficient parking for Royal Mail vehicles or for safely moving mail around the site. There is also no parking for customers.”

The spokeswoman assured customers there would be no impact on deliveries or jobs, and that if the merger did go ahead there would be “detailed planning” for a “smooth transition”.
