Scanning Specials (Again) after 1pm

Surely it would be alright if you got ID from the person before handing it over in the street? After all, that's all that happens back in the DO when they go to pick the parcel up. In fact, before becoming a postie, I don't recall ever actually being asked for ID when I've picked up parcels.

Put it this way - if an RM van was sat on the other side of the road with your DOM/Lino sat in it would
you still hand it over? Not often I agree with jobsworth procedures but in this case I do - the only place we are allowed to hand over
SD is at the the delivery point - nowhere else. If you get screwed over what are you going to say to the family
just before Christmas 'I lost my job because I handed over a Special Delivery in the street'? Would the customer
appear as a character reference for you as you're getting booted out the door?

You might get called an arsehole or similar by the customer but at least you'll be an arsehole with a job......

Handing over the item at the DO/Post Office I would assume is classed as a delivering the item in a secure environment
recognised by RM.

The fact you've never been asked for ID is someone else not doing their job properly.

I have been led to believe this also, not from our DOM, but from our locker staff. But being told conflicting information on here. How hard would it be for the business to put together a list of Do's and Dont's for what is, afterall their premium service.

Response to letter in Aug 2013 Courier confirms you can do this as long as it's at the doorstep delivery point (ie not in the next street when the customer
comes up to you waving a 739 at you).
Name of the response and wording in the Courier:

Graham Wonham, premium products improvement manager, replies:
The correct procedure in this instance is to scan the barcode on the item again, scan the item as delivered, obtain the customer’s
signature and then hand over the item (in other words, simply repeat the delivery procedure as you would for a new item).
The reporting systems for Special Delivery and Royal Mail Tracked take the first doorstep scan event to stop the Quality of Service
clock, so quality will not be affected if you use this procedure.
I hope this helps to clarify things and should prevent this situation from happening
in future.

Classed as a failure, maybe, but not a failure. It's not our fault if the system is daft.

I've delivered loads over many years after 1pm as many of the rurals I cover do a return to depot journey via the same route out.

So long as the initial scan is pre 1pm then there is no issue so far as failure is concerned. Maybe your manager gets an email about the late scan and he has to click on a link to verify that there was an initial scan before 1pm. Sounds like hard work for the poor guy!
