I think someone is putting you on, never heard of the countback system. Your rep also sounds like a useless tool, go over his head to the area rep.

One thing I would ask - why are Saturdays more difficult to cover than any other day of the week? Is it because they are giving people who already have their rotational days off extra Saturdays off because they can just stick a reserve on it?

I have seen that happen. When a manager has needed somebody to do him a favour like come in a day off he has been able to use a 'spare' Saturday' as a bargaining chip. As always in this company, it's often your colleagues who are really screwing you over.

the CWU has no responsibility around contracts, at least none beyond making sure Royal Mail stick to their agreements.the union still allow these contacts to flourish.
As to D2D payments - everyone gets the same £0.
As to Delivery Supplement - up to 39 hours everyone gets the same. The extra beyond your contract hours is part of the SSPR payment. Also its illegal not to pay people the same, for the same job and the same hours, so RM always do, albeit they hide it in jargon.
As to reserves and Saturdays off - (plenty of threads on this but here goes) http://www.cwu.org/assets/cwu/legacy-as ... -_2010.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Page 25
As to getting your contract reviewed. That agreement is the AGENDA FOR GROWTH, STABILITY & LONG TERM SUCCESS oneSaturday Attendances
In addition to the above it is jointly recognised that Saturday attendances and in particular
the number of Saturdays worked require special attention in order to meet the aspirations
of employees and the needs of the business.
In recognition of this Royal Mail and CWU commit to providing more Saturday off options as
part of improved attendance patterns for delivery employees. We have jointly explored and
identified a number of options/opportunities to maximise the number of Saturdays off.
Whilst the precise number of Saturdays off and the aspirations of employees will vary from
unit to unit, both parties believe we can deliver cost effective and reliable options that will
maximise the number of Saturdays off for those who wish them. Royal Mail and CWU
commit to achieving at least 1 in 4 Saturdays off for the majority of employees (including
reserves) during the roll out of the operational transformation programme. In some
circumstances this may be exceeded utilising jointly identified options to provide 1 Saturday
off in 2 or 3.

Though its not guaranteed that if extra hours are required, that it will be given to you, it should normally be offered on a Seniority basis.2.7.6 Employees will not be employed on a temporary contract exceeding two
years unless it has been agreed by the Employer and the Union that there
are very exceptional circumstances. The position of temporary contract
Employees will be kept under regular review, with a view to converting to
permanent contracts where and when possible.
2.7.7 The level of part time Employees’ contracted hours will be reviewed by the
Employer and the CWU locally on a six monthly basis. Where appropriate,
increased contracted hours will be offered to reflect the hours actually
worked and planned.

Many thanks to the Moderator for supplying such informative information - the national agreement the moderator refers to is from the 'business transformation agreement' between RM and the CWU in 2010 - Am I right to assume that this is still applicable now and has not been updated?
BTW I have been told by my manager that I am not entitled to any Saturdays off, and continues to give me a Tuesday. I worked 16 Saturdays in a row up to my summer holiday, and 7 in a row now after yet when i asked to confirm once and for all the policy of Saturdays off for reserves I was told there is none and I officially cant have any off.He says he would try to 'work with me' in special circumstances!
I have a family and would like one off a month like most others who like to have them off, although it seems that I am one of many reserves in the depot who are not on permanent walks and are denied Saturdays off for that reason
so finally with great thanks;
Do you think that the union reps at my depot should know about the policy of 1 in 4 saturdays off inc reserves? it must be a major point of complaint in most depots, and if the agreement quoted above is still relevant, how is it do you think that the union reps let the management get away with this? I would like to meet with my union rep at the depot to raise the issue of the agreement that exists to have 1 in 4 saturdays off ( reserves included) but would like to be fully knowledgeable prior - Im also a bit retisent as my first year is up in a week or so and im worried if i cause a stir my chance of being made 'permanet part time' will be affected.
thanks again

Yes the agreement still applies.
Also it "could" be classed as unfair treatment if you don't get at least an occasional Saturday off, and others do, might be worth a grievance on that basis.

Do reserves get the same amount of Saturdays off?
It's very rare for any reserve in our DO to get a Saturday off, can't remember the last one unless on a leave. Problem is no one seems to give a hoot as long as they get theirs off.
When they do work Satudays the Managements "favourites" all seem to be allowed to start very early and go home very early.
Only once come back on a Saturday and found a lino in the DO since I started.
Is every reserve working every Saturday to make sure there are no savings, so no need for a Lino to hang around?
Rant over!! Surprise surprise Work tomorrow!!!
