A driver in his 60s died after a crash with a Royal Mail postal van in a Norfolk village – taking the terrible toll of fatalities on the county’s roads this year to 25.
Police today appealed for witnesses to the crash, which happened at Shortthorn Road in Stratton Strawless just before 6am yesterday.
The crash happened near the junction with Holt Road – a location which villagers said had been the scene of numerous crashes.
The crash involved a grey Nissan Navara travelling towards Holt and a red Royal Mail postal van which was travelling towards Norwich. The driver of the Nissan, a man in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Royal Mail van suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital for treatment, but discharged yesterday lunchtime.
The road was closed for five hours while emergency services dealt with the incident and accident investigators carried out their work. It re-opened at 11.10am. Norfolk police appealed for anyone who saw the crash, or anyone with information about the way the vehicles were being driven beforehand, to contact them.
Villagers said that there had been previous crashes at that junction. Levi Drake, chairman of Stratton Strawless Parish Council said the parish council’s thoughts were with the family of the man who died.
And he said: “It certainly is a dangerous junction. There was another accident there just the other day. There have been quite a few there over the years, some of them quite serious. Before they staggered the junction it was not so bad, but in the last few years it has got especially bad, as people use Shortthorn Road as a rat run.”
