I was expecting an item today sent via SD before 1pm.
Tracking gives me:

26/09/16 21:32 ITEM COLLECTED GLASGOW MAIL CENTRE

Is the likelyhood the item just arrived at the Glasgow Centre 'too late' to move onwards?

Help with a Special Delivery
No, you should have received it today. Any and all Special Deliveries are delivered the next day.
Contact Royal Mail first thing tomorrow and complain, but please do it politely. The goods news is that with Special Delivery you will be compensated if it gets lost, but the sender is now entitled to a refund on the delivery charge.
Hopefully, it might start moving again tonight if someone has misrouted it (happens rarely but it does happen) and if it does the sender can still claim a refund.

However there are some postcodes where the guarantee doesn't apply, hopefully you aren't in one of them. They are mainly the highlands and Islands.

thanks for the reply. My postcode is reasonably 'normal'.
I did try a chat via the RM website this afternoon - the helpful person told me it was posted too late for next-day delivery. I beg to differ as it was posted at 1pm, but there you go.
Hopefully it'll move along soon.....

I think you are right about that. Too late for next day delivery is another way of saying that you missed the last collection, but you didn't miss it because your item ended up at the mail centre that evening. There may be some exceptions in the Highlands & Islands, but this was posted in Ayr which is not that far from Glasgow. This looks like a balls up to me, make sure that the sender applies for a refund.racingclub wrote: I did try a chat via the RM website this afternoon - the helpful person told me it was posted too late for next-day delivery.
