Conservative regional AM's 'concern' over Post Office move

Welsh Conservative regional AM Suzy Davies has added her support to Bridgend traders fighting plans by the Post Office to move its branch from Dun-raven Place to the basement of WH Smith’s in the Rhiw Centre.

She has backed the campaign to get the bottom half of the town centre re-opened to traffic and a petition earlier this year called for the pedestrianisation of Queen Street, Dunraven Place and Market Street to be reversed – so that shoppers can drive in and park.

She said: “The post office is a major draw to this part of town and traders fear that if it moves, fewer people will go there, affecting other businesses nearby.
“I have written to the Post Office to object to these proposals and also to raise concerns about safety. I have worries about locating what is a very busy post office in the basement of a shop.”

The regional AM has expressed concern about the fire safety aspect of using the basement if it becomes a post office.


Ms Davies is also worried about what will happen to the existing post office site if the move takes place.

She said: “Traders are keen to retain the post office there but if it goes, we need a business to replace it that will act as a draw to the bottom end of town.
“I hope to contact the owners if the move goes ahead to find out what their plans are to ensure that this important site contributes to the vibrancy and regeneration of Dunraven Place.”
