POST BOOST FOR 'URINE SLIP' CLOSE AFTER ROYAL MAIL BAN

Residents at a Dundee block of flats who hadn’t received any Royal Mail deliveries since December have finally received some good news.

The company has announced that tenants of 221 Albert Street will now be able to collect deliveries from the Post Office in the same street.


Royal Mail had previously suspended deliveries after a postal worker was injured slipping on urine in the stairwell within the close.

The company has continued to carry out a series of risk assessments over recent months, but deliveries have not been resumed and post had previously been rerouted to the West Pitkerro Industrial Estate for tenants to collect.

Aftab Alam Quereshi, 39, welcomed the news. He said: “There are still some issues, but this is certainly welcome — if you don’t have a car it was a long journey to collect mail.”

Maryfield councillor Lynne Short said work to improve the close is continuing.

She said: “This is definitely a more beneficial collection point for tenants.

“I know council officers are still in contact with landlords to try to address the rest of the issues which are facing the close. The new head teacher at Morgan Academy has already made improvements with trying to tackle the issue of kids loitering within the block during lunchtimes.”

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said the delivery suspension is still in place until repairs to make the close safe are carried out.

She added: “We have now agreed with the local Post Office in Albert Street that customers can pick up their mail there, instead of travelling to our delivery office.

“We sincerely apologise to those affected customers for the inconvenience and we hope a solution for repairs can be found soon. The safety and welfare of staff is paramount and suspension of delivery is always a last resort.”
