Corbyn Slams Destruction Of Post Office's Network

POST OFFICES are being “destroyed” by government cuts, Jeremy Corbyn said yesterday as bosses defended their controversial outsourcing programme.

Post Office general manager Tom Moran said the “modernisation” programme has resulted in 200,000 extra opening hours.

The latest stage of the programme will see numerous Crown post offices — the large branches currently run in-house — farmed out to private companies including WH Smith.

Workers have voted to strike against the plans along with job losses and pension cuts.

Labour leader Mr Corbyn said: “The never-ending cycle of cuts, closures and franchises is destroying a much-loved British institution.

“It is vital that the government now urgently intervenes and works with key stakeholders to put together a strategy for the future of the Post Office, in order to protect this publicly owned service from withering away.”

But Mr Moran said: “The extra opening hours we’ve added over the last four years add up to the equivalent of 5,000 new branches — that’s a significant achievement that makes a real difference for our customers.

“This sends out the clear message that we are committed to sustaining our branch network at its current size of more than 11,600 post offices, and to improving it so we can meet the ever-changing needs of today’s customers.”


The Post Office was kept in public ownership when the government privatised Royal Mail’s deliveries in 2013.
