Postman and neighbour rescue woman from Leckhampstead kitchen fire

A QUICK-thinking postman and neighbour rescued an elderly woman from a Leckhampstead kitchen fire this morning (Mon).

Three pumps were called at 10.30am to a semi-detached property in a street called Nuttingtons, including two from Newbury and a third from Lambourn.

On arrival, firefighters discovered an elderly woman, believed to be suffering from Alzheimers, had left a cushion on a cooker hob, which had caught fire.

Prior to the firefighters arrival, the postman had turned up with deliveries and after spotting smoke, took the woman to a window for some fresh air.

A neighbour meanwhile threw the cushion out the back door and put water on it to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters gave First Aid to the woman and ensured the fire was extinguished.

Paramedics at the scene tested both the woman and her neighbour for smoke inhalation, but both were unhurt.

The cooker, hob and cooker hood were damaged in the incident.

Firefighters left the scene after about half an hour.
