In our office we are denied O/T because they would rather use managers to do postman's work..... We complained to the union who produced a dossier containing times that managers worked and when to the MCM who was taken-a-back that this was happening (???)...but still it continues :evil/mad.
We are denied EVR because "they" are short staffed and can't afford to loose us (as workers).....
Is this happening anywhere else?.

It probably happens in most RDCs, MCs and DOs

Get back on to the union, and keep doing it until it gets sorted properly.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Isn't there a national campaign about this in cwu. Bristol mail centre certainly has its own agreement all signed up by MCM so that any managers doing real work, have to be reported and receive counceling. Some blokes have made it a hobby to spy on managers full time. They have a thing though where if a failure looks likely, managers can take part.

we have same problem at our mail centre the worst offenders are the acting managers who spend all shift doing the OPG work getting paid gaffers wages. They have a book in there office which they are supposed to enter times and reason they perform OPG work as agreed by mail centre manager and union its blank and has been for months.
Its causes resentment and low morale in the work place which was highlighted in our have you say questionnaire. Management is now trying to find out why morale is slow low when it clear when we see a managers performing our work we take the foot of the gas etc.You question why the managers have to do it they reply by saying certain members of staff are not working to required standard so they have to muck in. THE MANAGERS ARE BASICALLY CRAP

Happening in our mail centre in West London. Managers are sorting tracked parcels between 1800-2200, oh sorry when they arent on their mobiles or taking smoke breaks! One was challenged and he says its because there is a lot of budget for managers OT and they are paid at postmans rate. It is amazing that he is also a managers union rep, so should know better. We have WAMS quo
ting that with OT they are earning up to 65k per year. For this one manager has 11 staff and another 5 The amount of management work they do is negligible. Amazing when he is off we run the job ourself.

In Glasgow Mail Centre it's getting worse !! Every shift they are at it , some doing more work now than when they were OPG grade. When challenged they either tell you to get on with your work , or hit out with a load of excuses . Shift managers even doing OPG work , they don't like getting challenged either . It would probably be easier naming the ones that don't perform OPG work !!!

If managers continue to perform opg duties get local CWU rep to challenge and if after being challenged managers ignore then rep should put in a Stage 1 Disagreement Form to shift manager and if No Agreement can be reached with Shift boss to stop managers performing Opg duties then move to Stage 2 Disagreement to Area Rep and MCM. Using the Industrial Relations framework in this way does work and will get results.

Get CWU rep to challenge managers performing OPG work, if continues use Industrial Relations framework. The excuse from Management that 'I don't have enough staff' is just that an excuse. Get more jobs agreed, advertised and filled, list extra overtime for current staff.

It shows how little managerial work there is in their working day that they have time to do OPG work.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share
