A train enthusiast has won £500 compensation from Royal Mail after a parcel was misdelivered and damaged.

David Rowlands, of Shepherd Street, Northfleet, bought a rare train timetable dating back to May 1948. It was one of the first timetables printed after the railways were nationalised.

Mr Rowlands, 54, who has worked for railways for more than 20 years starting from a telephone clerk and working up to an operations manager, found the rail-related gem in Poland.

However, its delivery became a nightmare when on Saturday, May 28, it was shoved through a door of a house with the same number in Springhead Road.

Mr Rowlands said: “The packaging was damaged, and the spine of the book ripped.”

After waiting for it to be delivered and Royal Mail saying it already had been, the mystery was only solved when the occupant of Springhead Road brought it round.

It turned out the occupant had been away, so could not have signed for the package either, even though a signature was required.

Mr Rowlands said: “I complained to Royal Mail but initially they blamed the postal service in Poland and said I should pursue them.”

After an inquiry from the Messenger, Royal Mail got straight back to Mr Rowlands.

He has now been given £500 in compensation to pay for the costs of getting the book – valued at about £300 – to be repaired.

Royal Mail spokeswoman Sally Hopkins said: “We have apologised to Mr Rowlands as he did not receive the high quality service our customers expect and deserve from Royal Mail on this occasion.

"We are still investigating what happened to Mr Rowland’s mail and we are in contact with him to resolve this matter as quickly as possible.”

If this postman-twat had put it in a damaged bag like he is supposed to with damaged mail that comes into the office the company would not be £500 lighter and our shares would reflect that. Couldn't be bothered.

He also put it into the wrong street and didn't get a signature! Too many complete useless twats like this working for the company. I'm not perfect but I always get a sig, and usually the right street. OK, usually is a bit of an exaggeration.....sometimes.
