Wells man accused of threatening to burn down post office

A MAN who threatened post office staff at Wells that he was going to burn the place down and kill them all when they refused his request for some money has appeared in court.

Daniel James Lawson, 29, of no fixed address, was brought before Somerset Magistrates in custody after being arrested by police when concerned staff raised the alarm.


The 29-year-old, of no fixed address, pleaded not guilty that on June 28 at the Post Office in Wells he used towards Maria Williams threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour causing her to believe that immediate violence would be used against her.

Christine Hart, prosecuting, told the court at Yeovil that Lawson was alleged to have been threatening and abusive towards the staff after being told he had no money in his account when he tried to withdraw some cash.

He was then said to have shouted: "Give me my money, if not then I will burn this f***ing place down and kill all of you".

A review of the case was conducted and the matter was adjourned until August 26 when Lawson was ordered to return to the court for a trial to take place.

Until then the defendant was released on bail with conditions not to go to the Post Office in Wells and not to contact Maria Williams and two other named witnesses in any way.
